Muroc, When The Hot Rods Ran, by William Carroll. If my sometimes foggy memory serves me, my copy came from Motor Books International. Feel better soon, enjoy your down time. I hope it doesn't hurt to bad.

50 Years of Rod and Custom magazine! I love that book! The Rodders Journal put it out. 200 plus hardbound pages of amazing cars and great pictures.

not really a hot rod book... but Pinstripe Planet is a rad hardcover, very high-quaility photos with some good history, and cool artist profiles.

Hey Guys, Since we are on the subject of Books and Customs, are there any books with information on Harry Westergard.
    Thanks,

  11. One I have always liked is Hot Rod Pioneers by Ed Almquist. He has a page or two biography about VIP's in the rodding world. Lots of great B&W photos too. Nothing too in depth but a good overview.

I'll second that. Hundreds of pics of amazing cars/engines in every book.
    The best in my opinion.

  13. I'll "thrid" that. I just got his latest...."Hot Rods S****book"

    You can email him direct:

I don't have to many books about customs except Tex Smiths's how to books, but I do have one I enjoy, Hot Rod & Custom Chronicle by Thom Taylor and one featured car is Harry Westergard's '40 Mercury. Steve

Good choices for history and style.
I must add two books that are packed with great traditional tech info:
Tex Smith's " How to Build a Hot Rod Ch***is" and
Vern Tardel's (really written by Mike Bishop) "How to Build a Traditional Ford Hot Rod" - Stuff few young guys know and most old guys forgot!

Whatever the reason for your "vacation" keep the dream.
