I just got back from camping in the mountains of Colorado near Druango and Silverton. Anyways, in Silverton there where a few cool old International trucks and a dodge truck. I really like the four wheel drive international. the FWD (the yellow truck) was in South Fork Colorado, and is pretty cool looking of a truck too if you ask me! the San Juan mountains are beautiful too!
jeez... normaly sombody says somthing after twenty minuts, no mater what time of day it is, but only one view? jeesh!
How do you choose your camping trips? Send out a scout for tin ahead of time? LOL Nice pictures...thanks for putting them up!
Well ****srock I think your pics are neat. I have never seen some of those type trucks before . Great scenery too......THANKS for sharing.!!
****srock, you should have stopped by my shop , am in alamosa about 45 min. from southfork ... the yellow truck has been sitting there for about 30 years , we just had a small car show at the blimpie burger store a couple of months ago ..... there are a bunch of cool " projects " lying around the san luis valley , all in great shape , and oh ya , according to the owners , going to start fixing on it next week ............. the senery is awesome !
If i would have know that you had a shop in alamosa, I would have stopped there rather than spending an hour or so eating lunch in the Wal-Mart parking lot! oh well! I might be going out that way again next summer, so if I do I will be sure to to stop by your shop! Jordan
Amazing stuff. I used to marvel at the stuff we would see on our Sunday drives as a kid. Dad would point out the tin and Mom would read or what have you. On your next trip, try exploring around Cripple Creek in the Rockies. My wife and I stumbled across old mining equipment with industrial Chrysler hemi's and a bunch of T stuff ****tered about.
durango and silverton are by far my favorite places to visit out there....i swear that's where all the old, tough as nails trucks retire....
I got a full set of early winged SW gauges in an SW gauge panll out of one of those FWD firetrucks in a local junkyard. Worth checking out.
Ouray is a really cool place to visit too. I think the entire SW corner of the state is the yellow cake capital of the world! Yankee boy is beautiful in the spring, almost seems staged, gorgeous. Engineer p*** is super cool to check out, that is, if you can get your vehicle to run up there! ha Oh oh, also, just the drive from Silverton to Ouray over Red Mountain P*** anytime other than in the middle of a snowstorm (ULP) is AWESOME! Colorado is one of our nations treasures to be sure.
the drum brakes on that truck where about 6"x14" if I had to guess. the whole truck is just a monster after I looked at those other Internationals. I had an over head valve inline 6 and a two stick ******, and there was a tag on the front diff with a ratio of something like 7.13:1 or around there. Jordan
its kinda hard to make out, but thats black bear p*** on the down side to Telluride. theres a CW McCall song about it too.
I found an ad for 47 International 1 1/2 ton flatbead in my local rag yesterday. He says it ran when he parked it 5 years ago and wants $750 or best offer. I'm sorely tempted to figure out where I can get $750 dollars to make me a cool old car hauler. You can't beat those lines. Thanks for the pics.
Silverton's a great place to visit did you guys ride the train? Almost looks like a model a grilleshell in the back of that truck. I was in Silverton like 12 years ago, that was one of the stops on the great american race ( I think that's what the tour was called) kinda sketchy when those big cadillacs and other large cars were cruising down the canyon with mechanical brakes and all but I guess that's how it was when the cars were new! Glenwood springs is a neat place too, cool pool or, well, hot pool would be more accurate! thanks for the photos.
no, we didnt ride the train, they wanted $70 a head, and we didnt want to spend that on our first trip to silverton, as we will probaly be going back there some time (hopefully with a jeep too ). but we did get to see the train come in while we where there just by luck. and i did this, because I thought it looked cool... in addition to the D&SNGRR we also got to see Galloping goose #5 which was made from a Pierce Arrow although not really hot rod related, they are both mechanical masterpieces in my eyes. Jordan
Of course going down Wolf Creek P***es 7.5% grade with a fully loaded truck and trailer that tips the scales at almost 16,000 LBS is a little scary too! but mechanical brakes... EEK! By the way, you guys are more than welcome to look at the pictures I have uploaded onto Photo Bucket of my trip http://s46.photobucket.com/albums/f117/****srock/Colorado/ and feel free to check back, as I dont have all of my pictures uploaded quite yet. just takes time! p.s. sorry for so many off topic posts! Jordan
Next time any of you guys are headed to the Colorado High Country, don't forget to swing through Gunnison. If you come the last weekend in August there's a pretty good Car Show with about 350 cars. And, we throw a hell of a Lonely Knights party out at my place after the show with a live band, catered food, the whole nine yards. This year the show is August 25th. You can check it all out at; www.lonelyknightskustoms.com Go to the gallery and find the Gunnison Car Show links, there are a couple of years worth in there and they pretty much tell the story. This year the party band is "Lonesome ****" from Kingman AZ. Always good times ! Johnnie.
GREAT shots! There is a group of us that will be traveling thru that area in alittle over one week. We'll be staying in Durango and taking the train to Silverton. Can't wait to see some of the sights you've shown us.
I sold them parts for the Galloping goose years ago. NOS brake drums as I remember... Hey HRLC coming through Denver? I think I owe you a spagehetti dinner and a gl*** of wine.
Thanks for the additional photos, I'll be back in Colorado in Sept or October to pick up some cars, Hoping to go to the Dynamite they have twice a year, sounds like some good clean blow some **** up fun!! I reccomend that you go to the Gateway auto museum too, I was just there earlier this month, I'll post some photos on a new post.
Just went through that way myself in June. That road from Durango to Ouray is one hell of a drive, I drove it twice in one day after delivering some things to Durango. Great scenery its amazing how many abandoned mines are along that route. As narrow as that road is it gets a little hairy at night. Don't really have any good pics of the fun parts as I was to busy keeping the car on the road.
Looks like they've kept the weeds down around the trucks. For once I don't have a problem with something becoming yard art. I've got a KB-6 flatbed here, that was running about 10 years ago. Got it off a farm, people keep telling me what nice junk iron it would make, and I just shake my head. Anyone want to take it to a good home? Its complete and solid, but a little rough around the edges.
Nice .. nothing like that around here ! My friend Lives in Durango , stop by local Harley dealer and go to part dept. Say hi to Re-Todd .. he will know where that came from
I was in the p***anger seat when i took this picture, kinda fuzzy, but it shows how close the edge was. also a few pictures that show a few of the mines near Red Mountain.
