Yesterday I went to a shop to pick up a part. I noticed that they do inspections. I told him that I have a 52 F1 Ford that needs a sticker, and said nothing more. His first question was, does it have any modifications. I told him what could be plainly seen. It was an F1 sitting on an 89 Chevy frame and has a 68 engine. He said that it would have to be inspected as an 89 vehicle because it was modified. I told him that it was not registered as a modified vehicle, it was registered as a 52 F1. He says that according to TXDOT I will need cat converters and air polution crap on the engine. I just spent seven hours pouring through TXDOT laws and can't find anything pertaining to modified vehicles. Anyone have any insight on this??? <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->
Take it some where else. I had a guy tell me my exhaust pipes, which did not exit in the stock position, would not pass inspection. This is the same guy who could always find something different that was wrong with the car. This was my first car inspection experence. I took the car to a different shop and lo and behold it passed.
That guy is a complete moron. If it's registered as a '52, the only laws that apply to it are those for '52 vehicles. So you can do pretty much anything you want with it. All that's required are the normal safety items...wipers, horn, parking brake, good brakes, good tires, all your lights work. Maybe you should take the truck to him anyway, have him fail it, then report it to TxDot and have the idiots license removed so he won't screw any other people.
In NY the car gets inspected by the year it was registered as.So whatever the regulations were back in 52, those are the only regulations that apply to that vehicle, not catalytic converters and crap. You should do some research, and see if TX is the same, then go blow the guy in.
Go somewhere else and say NOTHING about modifications. Have the title/registration which states it a 52 and only bring out your ammo if there's gonna be a fight. I've found most inspection guys don't really have a clue about mods, etc. unless that info is volunteered. they may recognize something's screwy, but I've just played dumb. I do NOT need the respect of the inspection guy because I build my own!! I just want the sticker.
I take the daily to a inspection place where I live and well the daily isn't really old its a 1991 F-350 with a 460. and I cut the cats off and took all the pollution control off of it and they don't even open the hood. they just check the lights. But a rusty new truck is less conspicious than a 52 ford.Just my experience with inspections
Lived in Kingwood, Texas and noted at a local inspection station every vehicle brought in for Inspection by a man usually passed with no problems. Every vehicle brought in by a female needed the head lights adjusted which they would be happy to correct to pass inspection. State inspections which are done by a non state facility are a means for the public to be ripped off. Thats why many states have eliminated inspections altogether.
I just went throug this here in Austin. I find out it depends on the if the vehicle is registered as an Antique or a Classic. Antique is no inspection, 80 bones and nothing more for 5 yrs. But Im "limited to parades and shows and exhibition road use only" Yeah right. Classic is drive anywhere you want like normal vehicles but they do require yearly, but is inspected only as to what was required for your year. My 51 had no signals required and only one taillight. Goober at the original station didnt know and was gonna fail it. Also thought my pipes were illegal to but wrong again. I have heard alot of guys just go with the antique status and have no problems and drivem everyday.
Thanks for the input guys. After reading several threads and talking to several guys, I'm going to re-register it as an antique. No more sticker problems. I'll just go to parades, functions, and club meetings....Yeah, right!!!
