    Cyclone Kevin,

:( Just came across this tread on Harvey's Broiler a premier cruise spot for us in the '50's and '60's. The pictures made me very sick to my stomach and felling very depressed over this great icon of our car culture. You would see some of the greatest cars of the era cruising on the weekends. We would cruise up from San Pedro, cruise and watch all those great cars. Those were the days........ Silhouette57 knows what I'm talking about Harvey's, The Clock, Mel's, A&W in San Pedro and Torrance. I hate to say goodbye to Harvey's!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are working on the shirts, we have an address that can be reached by going to cyclonequickie@aol.com for ordering info.

    Cruiser,
I was a very young lil cruiser who attended Harvey's Fri-Sat nites cruise deal as a form of birth control for my then teenaged aunt Rose,In other words I was being baby sat:rolleyes: :D ;).
I remember looking up @ the HUGE Harvey's Sign! man that place was big! Many cool cars cruised that spot and much was written about it. Well the destroyers may have inflicted damage to a nearly 50 yr old building, but it hasn't damaged the memories of many and the desire to restore and rebuild what is left. I have seen worse come back for the brink, on top of that it makes for a great victory! Those goodbyes may be a lil premature;).

R&C Lee has a bitchen lil editorial re: the businesses of such as well as a pic of the Broiler in all its glory in the Oct, 07 edition.

The Rodders Journal #36 had a blip in there as well.
We are currently working on Harvey's Holy Ghost Cruise
(Date up in air now due to scheduling conflict of the CHRR in Bako on Sunday).

    Stay tune for more info.

  6. Kev,

I picked up a Lions Dragstrip documentry DVD at the Bixby Knolls show this weekend and it had a few shots from Harvey's back in the day...pretty cool. Keep the dream alive buddy...

cyclone, you may want to involve dave lindsay at http://new.photos.yahoo.com/gmfive@sbcglobal.net/album/576460762383666797
he's a nice guy and gets lots of hits on his events site once you nail one down. i also had an idea of contacting ricky and ronnies in torrance. would be a good place to get word out for the cruise/rebuild momentum. you may know of these places already?

WOW, has this become a sad saturday night for me...... I grew up three blocks away from the Broiler and this is just heartbreaking...... my parents retired and moved away from the house we grew up in the december before and i have not been beck to the old neighborhood since. This is just sad to know this place is gone...... from me and my brothers riding our bikes to the broiler to get a sundae and seeing all the guys who kept cruising there week after week and wishing some day i could have a "cool" car too, to having my first car ever and going to eat there after the first date i ever had. This was a huge part of the neighborhood and it is sad to know it is now gone....... i called my brothers who also are out of the area now and both of them were as outraged and sad that it could have been taken away from the generations around and those that are to come. It truly is a historical landmark that needs to be restored to it's full glory.......

I will be at the run and anything else that i can do to help count me in...... this was a staple in many people's lives and should be brought back.

....... i wonder if what the owner and the person responsible for the demolition would feel if the ghost run detoured to their front door step (or maybe even some burn out sessions on their lawn) to show them how much their actions have affected the community.......

  9. What a crying shame.Well done to Cyclone for kicking up a stink.Personally I find it incomprehensible that on a hotrodders website he's not getting 2000% support about a drive in being demolished. It would have been heartbreaking even if it was all legal. This is American culture at its greatest. The drive~in,chicks on skates, burgers and milkshakes, booth juke boxes, hotrod and customs,Route 66,Drag strips and surfing.Arn.t these what give American,s their identity(I thought of more but you know where I,m going). It,s a done deed now,and I guess things move on,but as was mentioned earlier some of these ARE historical land marks and should be preserved, even in the name of tourist attractions.Very ,very sad!?

    GaryC.

Here's an illustration I did for The Friday Art Show a few weeks back.
I was never at Harvey's and didn't really know anything about Harvey's until recently. I had my own hangouts in Southwestern PA that must have been a little like it. I know how I would have felt if someone had taken a bulldozer to any of them.

    A damn shame. :(

  25. Damn shame is right.

But you at least have dragways and drive-ins in California. In Detroit, we don't have Drive-Ins anymore, except one in the ghetto of west-side Detroit. The Van Dyke, the Troy, and Gratiot Drive In have all been razed.

Detroit Dragway-torn down. Mt Clemens Raceway-now a cheesy softball and bowling center. Ted's Drive In, and the Totem Pole? Gone, daddy gone.

I know of exactly ONE A&W drive in in the Detroit metro area.

So while it's a travesty that nobody feels enough to step up and pay to restore these landmarks (even in California), the Motor City has seen a lot of these demolished as well.
