I've done a search and I can't for the life of me find out what I'm doing wrong. I've got a '56 Buick manual for my '58 but I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the transmission to seperate from the driveshaft. Is there a u-joint hidden in there? I thought it would slide out, but I've got the motor on a cherry picker and it's not moving. What's the trick? Thanks a lot!

On my 48 chevy (sorry if this is no help, but-) there was a bell shaped cover over the tail-shaft. It slid back, exposing a very small u-joint. Not much to it. Hope this helps. Some one better will be along soon.

When I pulled th motor on a 53 I just unbolted the cup looking thing that bolts to the rear of the trans. The motor and trans slid out the front.

Yep, what those guys say. Unbolt the cup lookin thing from the back of the trans, should be 6 bolts, and the torque tube and trans should come apart with minimal fuss.

I bought a 50 Special 248 Straight 8 with 60K. I helped the guy pull it out, neither one of us ever did a torque tube before. We took the motor & trans in one piece. The front clip was still on.

We used a cherrypicker, pulled and pryed a little, then she came. A little binding going on, getting over the side motor mount was the most trouble. Finally we took them off... Come to think of it i took some bolts off the back of the ******'s

I pulled a 55 nailhead & dynaflow out in Wyo with help, the from clip was off that helped. Those were the 2 things i wanted off the 4 dr. That stuff was for the 2 dr. Ht on the trailer

Yup, it splits @ the torque ball. there are a couple bolts to loosen there and you (should be) are home free.

Disconnect the shocks, emergency brake cable, rear springs, 6 bolts on torque cup and roll rear wheels back.

Yep, I know exactly what your going through. My first car was a 51 chevy P/U w/torque tube, what a learning experiance that was.

    Later I've owed/restored/Hot Rodded several torque tube Buicks, two 58's (Limited and a Special), a 41, two 40's, a 38, a 37, and two 36's (40 series and a 90 series)

What does your manual read? Do you have a manual?

    Good Luck ,
