I think it could work. But it will require a lot of subtile and not so subtile work to get it just right. Its all about proportions just like Cleatus said. Here is a photoshop version I started some time ago... I never really finished it. What I can remember is that I moved the rear window foreward a little and used the side window A pillar reversed to create the B-pillar with a lot of reshaping. (but the four door C-pillar would work perfectly for that I think) I also lenghned the doors two inches or so....
Rik that is exactly what's been rattling around in my head, exactly!. I figure you could tweak the length and proportion issues by pulling out the headlamps a touch and shaving the trunk/ moving the bumper in slightly. Whatever the doors would need to be even longer than stock. I like the way you have made the door top curved it helps with the factory Kustom look and like you say the moredoor rear door tops would work perfectly. You started with one of my all time favourite cars, where is Xavier anyway, is he still banned?
Anybody building this?? Rikster, you are hurting me again!!!!!!! My Merc is under the knife and going through some major changes This could happen Thanks for the idea....... Happy Trails, Mick
Rikster, That is BAD***!!! One of the best photochops I've ever seen. I'm not completely sold on the idea of a 3 window but if it looked anything like that I'd drive it. -stick
I'd have to say I originally liked the first pic done by the original poster but now I saw do the black one, it's the best by far.
The 3 window coupes were 3 p***enger cars without a back seat traditionally. It would be difficult, given the style and lines of the 49-51 Mercs to do this in an attractive and striking way. Even that swoopy job with the swept back window lines still has an awkwardness to it.
Superior work there Rikster. That works for me - a nice shape that does not seem awkward. I really like the way the driprail drops behind the side window. I worked on a Photoshop version of this too and it really is tough to come up with a pleasing shape. I was beginning to be doubtful until I saw yours. Now I'm back to thinking it's possible. A really good looking 3 window would be a tough one to pull off - every line would have to be m***aged just ever so right - and even then, you'd have a lot of purists bagging on it just because. It's a thin line between love & hate.
My pal and fellow Hamber 2Tall is working on the photoshop right now, if it works out I'm going to go for it.
ok, now THAT one is gross....i think for it to work, the top has to be quite low.otherwise, the sail panel is seemingly too large. the angle and roundness of the new b-pillar is key...it really has to match the a-pillar I think(like rikster's photo)...if it flows correctly, then it will be bad-***...ANYTHING short of that would be a disaster ...go for it!
I think it would work if you also sectioned and shortened (and maybe narrowed) the car to '55 Tbird proportions otherwise it's gonna look like a too-long-in-the-*** 40's Imperial coupe. Or made a Volvo with Merc styling? Oh yea, you are already...
