I want convert my 1954 235 chevy distributor from single point to dual point. The dual plate conversions are hard to find and most of the time, more than I want to spend. Has anyone taken two single point dist plates and grafted them together to make a dual point plate? I have a pile of chevy dist to try it out with. Does anyone know if the metal the plate is made out of could be welded? I also have a nash dist with dual points. The California Bill book talks about converting one of these to be used as a dual point on the chevy 6. The nash dist I have is different from the book and actually looks like the plate could just be swapped with the 235 dist plate but I would have drill a new hole in the top of the distributor. Has anyone done the nash conversion? I really don’t care about HEI or pertronix. I want to know if I can convert stuff I have to something I want. Thanks

Damn, if you're that hard up to have a dual point conversion plate, PM me. The Nash conversion requires grinding off every other cam lobe.

I would never say never to a hot rodder, but it would be a tough job. A distributor has two critical angles one is the rotor angle thats where the rotor is in relationship to the contact on the cap.
The other angle is cam angle thats opens the contacts at the correct time .
This angle must be in the correct relationship to the point opening position etc to keep the firing voltage down.
To mount a single set of points would be a job getting it correct but to do two sets without a machine to see the angles is not going to be easy for sure.
I would spent my time , money and energy making the distributor run its very best with a new set of good quality points and leave it at that...:)
Still determined let me know i will se if i can come up with a dual point plate:confused: I have a few laying around.......

Well I took the dual point plate off of the Nash distributor and compared it to a 235 distributor plate. The two are identical other than the extra point post on the Nash (at least I think it’s a Nash). I also measured the two distributor cams and they are the same. I plan on cleaning up the Nash plate and putting it on the Chevy distributor tomorrow. I may need to get some new points but the same points were used for Cadillac’s, Buicks and a bunch more so that wont be a problem. Is there anything else that could be a problem that I’m not thinking of? I’m just thinking that there has to be a reason these were not mentioned in the speed manual. They were around the same time the book was written so why would they go through all the trouble to replace bushings and everything else to get dual points? Unless, I have some kind of aftermarket plate. It is a Dyna-Flyte which I think is aftermarket (not the kind with the ball bearings). I keep telling my self to stop doing these mad scientist projects but I think it’s a neurological problem.

The Dyna-Flyte dual point plate you have is one of many conversions available during the '50s. If it fits your 235 dist., it uses D-103 Delco points ... it's a trouble free item. Ball bearings weren't used in 6 cylinder Chevy/GMC conversions as the entire distributor advances.

I was just going to suggest the Dyna-Flyte kit. I threw one in on a whim earlier this summer and have been fairly pleased with it. Just stock up on points if you use it. I hit up every shop in town before I found a matched pair.
