dont know if its been asked before, if so maybe some one could point me in the right direction but....im looking for some inspiration for the headers on my coupester. post some pics of headers here! jeff
462" Buick in the 32. 1 7/8" primaries. ****** 3 1/2" collectors. 2 1/2" exhaust and tail pipe. FlowMaster two chambers. Home-made utilizing U-bends and home-made one piece 1/4" flanges. Headers mocked up in the 31 on 32 rails roadster. 1 7/8" primaries. Schoenfeld sprint car kit for Brodix head SBC's. Schoenfeld collector not shown. An about 45 degree short part of a U-bend goes between head and primary. (Buicks have a 45 degree slant to the exhaust port and SBC's are vertical.) Flanges are three per side, home-made out of 1/4" cold rolled.
I meant to add, if you're running SBC or other small engine many times you can find a commercially built full-on drag race style header that's a bolt-in or nearly so. Altering one or two pipes on the left bank will do it in most cases. The majority of the time the right side fits as is. Most of these headers have a collector that doesn't hang below the bottom level of the stock engine pan. Look for the smallest car your engine was in. IE: I used headers built for the FE 390 Ford in a Mustang twice. Once for my 59 Ranchero and next time around for my 62 Ford wagon. They fit close to the engine and the frame & steering components were not a problem. A different brand header was used each time. In both cases the right header fit with no alterations. Left side header required one minor pipe alteration on the Ranchero and the other set - different brand - on the wagon required two pipes be slightly altered. Alterations required welding and were not simply banging a dent in the primary pipe for clearance. Just so it's clear, I'm talking about full-on 4 into 1 headers here and not the so-called block huggers which are more of a convenience than a real header....
To add to what C9 said, I ordered the one set of headers I could find for my galaxie (390, auto). ****** super compe***ion series - 1 7/8 primary to 3.5 inch collectors. Unfortunately, they were intended for the manual transmission B-code cars. They fit the engine, but I had to have someone cut the crossmember in two places and modify it to fit the enormous collectors under it. I didn't think about bending the pipes, but as low as the old boat is, I probably wouldn't have been happy with the collectors any lower than they are.
Here is a picture of the Coupe's headers. I will have turn outs which will come out just behind the hairpin mounts. No mufflers.........................at least for a while. 1-5/8" and as close to equal as could get them.
Here's mine, I ordered the kit from lakeheaders.com and did em myself. Made the turnout out of a 90 degree 4" pipe and made the flanges up too. Put some baffles in em and got em powdercoated. I'm gonna change the turnout though, too much exhaust in the cabin when cruisin down the road!! Trial and error I guess!
Are there more pics of this car anywhere on the web? I'd like to see a lot more of it. Looks killer! MIke
