I want to make baffels for my headers on my model A. Any ideas? The open headers are cool but a little too loud for my neighbors and it makes it hard to hold a conversetion with someone while driving. yup its loud just wanna kick it down a notch. thinking of making my own baffels.
What kinda headers? Some harley baffles will work on zoomie type headers or www.lakerheaders.com has them pre-made. If it's a mega phone type, B***ani and Kerker motorcycle baffles might work. They are a perferated tube with a plate at each end. The tube is then wrapped with fiberglas.
Do a search!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There have been tons of Baffle making threads on here, I even did one. Sorry, I'm starting to sound like an old man.
There is a good one over on ruffrodders.com involving using a small gl*** pack to make baffles for a regular collector type open header, or you might do a search here.
An interesting development lately that I'd like to try is the auger baffle. If you've ever seen a grain auger on a combine or a post hole auger you get the idea, shouldn't be too hard to make some.
If you think so then go take a look at the thread at least before you go slamming other sites! They've at least got some kick *** build over there.
re are a number of baffle how-tos on some of the other message boards; this is how I did mine: I picked up these gl*** packs new on Ebay for $11 each - 3 diameter, 18 long, 1¾ core, aluminum coated, packed with fibergl***, and no ends. Drilled 2 diameter holes in the end caps. Welded the end caps to the gl*** packs. Measured and cut off enough of the casing so they would fit into the header snug. Installed a gasket, and bolted them in. Still going to add a 2½ or 3 diameter turnout and weld to the outside of the end cap to route the exhaust away
VW Baja stinger baffles. About $12 bucks apiece. Had to cut about 3 1/2" off and make an end plate. Still loud but haven't gotten a ticket yet.
my dad put motorcycle baffles in zoomies, bought them at a local harley shop, I think about 3 or 4 bucks a piece, not real cheap but quick if you don't want to mess around makin em.
This is what I'll be using. Is basically a 2" .120 washer cut in half and a few holes drilled in it. You then use a 2" header tube, cut a .120 slot half way through, insert the "baffle" and weld it back up and obviously grind the weld smooth. You then do a bunch like this but stagger them on two or three sides of the tube until you think you have enough or until it sounds ok. Yeah, I know it's a lot of work but I understand it does make enough of a difference. I haven't tried it myself yet though. And this I saw here on the HAMB.
what kind of headers? lakes or zoomies? i have the $4 jc whitney ones in my zoomies and i can actually talk to people around my car, but it still blows up when i get on it. the only drawback i can see from using the jc ones is they keep sending me emails about buying more ****! or if you really want to spend the time making a set, then heres a link to dreadmans tech. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=168222
Here is the thread I saw on using washers: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123933&highlight=exhaust+washers
