I have a guy in NEW YORK that is interested in buying my car.. He says he will buy it if it will p*** the safety inspection.. I live in CA. and we don't have those... The car only needs blinkers, belts ,etc if it originaly came with it.. The car is a 1926 Ford coupe registered as a 1926 Ford. What does New York require in their inspection? Thanks, Jason.
as long as the tires and brakes are good, lites and horn works and it has a windshield it shouldnt be a problem unless it looks like its unsafe then it will raise some red flags at the inspection station,
When someone is buying a car sight unseen I usually suggest that they pick a third party to look the car over. One place to find a list of "car guys" is the NSRA Fellowpages. He can randomly pick someone close to you and call them and ask if they will look at the car and is it worth $$. Think about it, would you buy sight unseen?
That's up to the buyer to determine. Lots easier for him to find out and pretty ignorant to ask a californian about NY local laws. Nothing against californians.
He didn't ask me what the rules are.. He just said he needs it to p*** inspection. This is a safe nice car with no blinkers or horn.. I am trying to find out what it would need to p*** NY inspection.. I sent this guy a ton of pics and video of the car... I offered to have it inspected by a third party... I own the shop that built the car and would take it somewhere else of his choosing.. He didn't think he needed it after all the stuff I sent him... Jason.
this may help locate a NSRA saftey inspector he will inspect your car for free and give you a inspection sheet and a window decal it should p*** a 18 point inspection and you dont have to haave turn singals or seat belts you can go to NSRA.com and find someone if you cant get back with me and i will find them for you i an a NSRA safety inspector but live in Ga. --- BAD MOJO
Making it p*** is his responsibility not yours. I live in NY. TO p*** safety it needs... Good tires Working brakes A parking brake that works Headlights Functional turn indicators - if originally equipt Function brake light(s) depending on year of manufacture A working horn Possibly a mirror(s) But again....it's his job to make it p*** inspection for NY. Not yours. I would say to him "What doe sit need to have and I'll tell you if it has it." If it doesn't have it, he'll have to add it.
I'd agree with MOJO, Find someone whose an NSRA inspector, and have them take a look. I'm also an NSRA inspector. The NSRA inspection is tougher than a few of the state vehicle inspections. It's never a bad thing to have done on ANY car. It isn't any kind of judging of your car, it's all about the safety for the people in the car, as well as those on the road around it! Here's a quick breakdown of what's required to p***: HORN SPEEDO REAR VIEW MIRROR GL***-NO CRACKS THAT INTERFERE W/DRIVERS VISION LIGHTS- 2 headlights w/high & low beam tail lights + Brake light (2 recommended but not required) License light WINDSHIELD WIPER NETRUAL SAFETY SWITCH D.O.T. TIRES STEERING - no excess play/flexing/binding no uncoventional steering components (chains/sprockets) THROTTLE LINKAGE - must not travel past center, 2 return springs reccomended FUEL SYSTEM - no leaks, lines safely run, tank vented properly - no clear plastic lines EXHAUST SYSTEM - no leaks, must travel past rear edge of front door SELF ALIGNING ROD ENDS SHOCKS - 1 automotive type per wheel BRAKES - 4 wheel hydraulic brakes required. no leaks, lines safely routed SCRUB LINE - no ch***is, steering or suspension componet may be below wheel rim. (does NOT include body sheetmetal, Exhaust or oil or trans pans RECOMMENDED ITEMS (not needed to p***): WINDSHIELD - must be safety plate (AS-1 recommended) SHIFT PATTERN (except 3 speed manual) FUEL LINES - properly run and clamped sufficently PARKING BRAKE CH***IS FASTENERS - all ch***is fasteners should have some typ of locking device installed (lockwashers, cotterpins, self-locking nuts) at least one thread should be exposed. Sorry to those who think this list is for "Street Rods" only. I'm just a safety kind of guy, so I like to see as much of this stuff on a car as possible...
I used to have that list hung up in the garage as a reminder. I agree with both you guys - safety first.
New York - I had a NYS Inspection License for several years. Most of this stuff is pretty obvious, I won't get into detail on the stuff I'm ***uming should be fine on your car. Windshield - no cracks more than 11" or in driver's field of vision (70% of windshield, not a lot of wiggle room there). Side windows cannot be cracked, but you can just take them out for the inspection if you like. One wheel has to be removed to examine the brakes. Hoses need to be in good shape. No leaks. Must have a muffler/exhaust system. Tires have to have the minimum tread. If you have wipers, they need to be good, but I'm not sure that's a requirement on a '26 model. Light-wise, if it's on the car it needs to work, but if it's not on the car and not required on that model year, you're fine. Same goes for mirrors - most require one inside and one outside mirror. Emissions standards are in effect in the NYC metro area and I'm not sure just what the details are there but I would think this car is exempt; the rest of the state it's 1996-up. As a note for everyone else, you can have all kinds of rot on the car as long as the frame is not rotted. Even then, if it's rotted but not near a suspension mounting point, you may get by. So if you want to fix it a little at a time, you can do that. It all depends on your inspector, too. If you look there are guys who will p*** them that don't even look at the car, other places they'll only hit you if a bunch of stuff is wrong and not sweat small stuff, and other places.. well a couple clowns a friend knows took an old truck to a dealer who wanted like $800 to fix and inspect a truck that ran and drove and had just run out of gas. And there are guys running fenderless, bumperless rods on the street, heck one local guy is running an old Tobias ch***is (tube frame) dirt modified, on the street with just some lights added to it. I had no trouble getting through a truck with a weak muffler and backup lights that don't work for some reason I'm too lazy to figure out (bulbs are good). If he has a guy he does business with regularly, he'll probably be fine. Additionally, NY does not require the ***le on that car - be sure to send along the registration, if CA gives you such a thing. They'll look at the ***le and hand it back to him.
