A cool trifecta of vintage bombers flew in a couple days ago I have a soft spot for B24's My uncle was a nose gunner and was shot down in one on a mission bombing Gotha Germany on 2/24/44 and was a POW for almost a year and a half
Those tour the country every year by the Collings Foundation: www.collingsfoundation.org I bought a ride in the B-17 when it was in Burbank. One of the best things I ever did....gives you one hell of a lot of respect for the guys that flew those.
Living nearthe airport has a couple good points, however fighter jets taking off @6am aint one of them!!!
oh ****, tondelayo... i've seen that nose art before. a B17 comes around here every couple of years, i hoped it'd be this summer. there's an ENORMOUS P-51 fly in in columbus at the end of september too.
RAD! My grandfather is a co-owner of a P-51. He took me to a lot of vintage military air shows when I was a kid. I'll always have a soft spot for things like that.
holy **** part II... they're coming to zanesville NEXT WEDNESDAY! i'll be laying out the air corps dress uniform tuesday night...
I've flown in that B-24 just last year and I've flown in several other WWII aircraft in the past 6 years. The best was the B-29 "Fifi" what an awesome plane. The "G" forces on take off were unbeliveable that thing is a power house! So I've flown in a B-17, B-24, B-29, C-47, and a B-25. It helps that I am the editor of a military history magazine so I get to fly on all these incredible WWII airplanes.
I love the WWII airplanes. One day about fifteen years ago, I was at the beach and about 5-6 planes from the Confederate Air Force flew up the beach from Brownsville area headed north. It was so cool seeing B29's, Jap Zeros, and others flying around out of nowhere. It takes you back in time. I couldn't believe it, a Jap Zero flying up the coastline like an invasion or something. Very cool day at the beach.
Which one? May be scheduled for Gathering of Mustangs and Legends. All the cool kids will be there! http://www.gml2007.com/ Aman, thats been a while. (I used to live in Harlingen back in 1971)
Very cool. I'm by The Burbank Airport, and a few WWII Fighters have been taking off and landing today. One was just ****ing hauling *** over my place around lunch time. Just ****ing hauling. Gave me goose bumps
i almost came unglued the first time i saw a mustang flying... the modern super duper B1 bomber, eh, it was cool, but the mustang teared up my eyes and i felt like i'd just drank a double triple of my good navy rum. the gathering of the legends might be all i can take. we have a friend around here with an AT-6 texan, whatever he is flying, if he comes our way he flies past, turns, sets the plane on the deck coming up the back 40 and buzzes the house. he won't get very low in the texan (i have been dived at... sweet) but i have looked down at a stearman heading my way.
That's awesome! I almost took a ride in the Yankee Lady 2 years ago at the Akron airshow. Those big birds get me all watery eyed and ****. I can't get enough of them.
My boys and I got to climb around in the Yankee Lady earlier this year as part of an SAE sponsored event. If I didn't have a ton of **** to do already, I'd be a member at the Yankee Air Museum. I love that place.
Cool stuff. I saw "Yankee Lady" and an ****** flying over Novi earlier... kinda had to do a double take. This is 2007, right? And, if anyone has a picture of the "horse" on the back of "Tondelayo", could ya send it to me PM like. I took about 100 digi pictures at Thunder over Michigan and the first 90 ( all the WWII stuff) didn't take... the camera didn't like the "into the sun" angles I guess. Thanks, Jay
Those were all in town a couple weeks ago, Got to see and better yet HEAR two of them fly over my house when they were leaving.
i dont mean to shift topics but is anybody going to the gathering of mustangs? ill probably be there also, will there be any car related activities going on in the area that week?
When ever the vintage combat planes visit here they land coming right over my house and shop. When we get the schedule for their departure I always drive around to the other end of the runway and watch them leave. It's an emotional thing with me as my father was a bomber pilot during WWII (B-17 and B-29)and I spent my growing up years moving around the country as he was transfered from base to base flying B-29's (again for a short while) then on to B-47's and B-52's. It would be nice if he were still here so I could go to the Air Force Museum at Wright Patterson AFB with him one more time. Frank
I love the old warbirds.. Theres nothing like the sound of the old bombers too! 4 piston engines, just drone on.and on.and on...
anybody going to the gathering of the legends, send me a PM and we'll meet up at the show... i can't wait. they're going to have tons of planes flying around in addition to the mustangs.
I was gonna mention the one at Camarillo. A sad deal- a family man soloing his P-51 flipped it while landing and was killed. Thanks, Kurt
Last week i was at the largest air show in the world, EAA's Airventure in Oshkosh WI. They lost two P-51s in a formation landing incident. trail bird ended up running up on the front 51 and trail tried to correct but ended upside down in an explosion. sad sad thing to see with your own eyes. On a lighter note, the rest of the shows aircraft were great to see up close. all those vintage aircraft, taxiing about was a sight for sure. I ended up taking a ride in one of the Bell 47G (M.A.S.H show) helicopters around the pattern.
i rode in that b-24 on memorial day weekend. it's $425 a ride, but you should do it. it is the best thing you will ever do..
man, i'd hitch a ride in something if i had any dough... had to take a summer cl*** for the teaching gig and it's been a tight summer dipping into the savings account here and there. subs***ute teachers don't get paid year round, with that college cl*** taking away my foundry time last month, it's been rough. looks like i'll be spectating once again! i'll be there though, i think i was thee every day when sentimental journey came to town last year.
I always loved the WW2 aircraft. My Dad was in the Army Air Corpes Here's a shot when he was training to be a pilot. Here he is taking possesion of a shiny new B 17 during the war. and here's a shot of my sons and I when we took him to see this B 17 when it flew into Martins airport a couple years ago. Dad died about 6 months after this shot was taken, he was 84. There's not many of the "Greatest Generation" left. I'm glad my boys were able to share that special day with their grandfather.....
