Tech request: Temporary engine wiring harness

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 4t64rd, Aug 3, 2007.

  1. Can somebody post a diagram of a temporary engine wiring harness?

I just need something to fire the engine while it sits in the frame without having to wire it up permanently.

12V to the HEI, then hit the starter.

To start...one wire from a battery source to HEI, preferably through a switch.
Another wire through a push****on from bat to small S teminal on solenoid.
Ground and pos starps from bat to any bolt and solenoid...done to fire. What alternator...3 wire or 1??

Are you needing to test the alternator?
Otherwise, I never mess with that part.

I worked in a salvage going to college and had a standard starting setup that I carried in my tool box.
I cut 4' of the brown HEI connection wire and put an alligator clip on the other end. Two battery cables to the starter (+/-) and a screw driver to jump the batt + to the S on the solenoid. I also had an old 80-90wt squeeze bottle for fuel.

If you are going to bother making this, I also recommend splicing a gator clip to the HEI clip end. Then it works for coils as well.

Plug in stump of 2-wire plug...one wire, I think bigger and red or orange, can just make a U-turn and bot to post for big wire...other wire, just splice in a small light socket (really!) of the type that has hot and ground wires to a small single filamnet bulb, thence to wsame terminal feeding ignition wire.
Big wire on threaded post to bat. You don't really even need the alt just to test fire...only need ignition. And starter, since you have goldchainer motor with no socket for the '46 hand crank...
Next time, flathead with magneto and kerosene lights...don't need no wire...

Gauges--good to have oil pressure and temp. Don't fool with temp wires here--get a cheap&trashy parts store underdash panel with mechanical temp and oil, consider them part of your tool collection for engine builds. Won't cost much more than a couple of rolls of wires.

    me too

We never bothered with alternators or temp gages, we'd just stick a hose from the fuel pump inlet into a gas can, connect a big clip lead from battery to the hei or coil positive terminal, and screw in an oil gage to check pressure. Start it by either hitting the starter cable to the battery terminal on fords, or use a screwdriver on chevys and moparts to jump the small terminal to the big one on the solenoid.

Having the air cleaner on the engine helps prevent fire problems.
