I thought about making my model into a gasser, but decided on tow truck FOR the gassers. I can snap some pics as a gasser though iff you like.

  2. Low and slow that's the way to roll. I agree that the straight axle idea may prove a bitch to drive after awhile. The Bonneville push truck with some nerf bars sounds cool. How 'bout changing the front clip to an Olds, Pontiac or Buick??Will that work? Saw a Pontiac version at the Atomic Rockabilly Rumble a few years back. Had killer scallops and kustom tanneau cover.

You're on track...that body style just was not one that was used during the gasser era. There were probably a lot of them used as push cars at the drags though. I love gassers, but there are just some cars that should not be "gasser-ized". This is one of them...

Do what you want, it's your car, you only have to please yourself.

That said, if I had a '59, I'd want it to look just like this.

Do your homework and make it a real gasser, figure out how to make the traction. Like movin the axle around and the right ladder bars and shocks.
    Then Race it.

Seen from the very objective side an Elky has no potential for a gasser, because all Elky-riders (me included) will tell You how easy it is
to burn rubber or slide around corners because of no weight on the rear axle. And if You build it like a gasser You have to use it as a gasser.......
On the other side it could be interesting that You wanna go, where no man (or only a few) has gone before.......
At least its You who has to drive it.

@Scooterville: The twinbrother of Yours showed up in my garage in Germany :))))))))))))

Do it as a gasser. There are lots of lowered customs out there. Break the mold a do what you want. It could be way cool. Good luck.

If you live some where that lends to driving without losing the front wheels to a pot hole the size of a Kia...why not? Those cars are cool no matter how you look at them.

Do it but don't build a mile-high street freak. Cut the wheel wells, add some pie-crusts, leave the rear down low and jack up the front ala the early gasser style with steelies out back and a cast-finish five spoke up front. Fenderwell headers, multi-carbs, maybe a high-winding small block... and if it doesn't get enough traction.... fill the tailgate with lead and relocate a huge truck battery to the rear axle.

AMT recently released a 1/25th scale model of the '59 Elky with a blown Cadillac engine "race" option build.
Buy it, build it just to get your Elky race car rocks off and out of your system then build your real Elky a cruiser as most are going to wish you did and tell you their wishes until you un-race it in frustration...

Fucking awesome. Nothing against lowriders but this is much cooler.
It makes me wish I'd kept my '58 Ranchero and built it like that.

    This option gets my vote...

  25. Gasser gets my vote. Just remember not all gassers had straight axels and nose up stance. No offense, but if i ever use the term "low and slow" to discribe how I want to build a car I'll have to get my fucking head examined.

    wow, old thread

Used to have a tall-stance 59 bel air with no front bumper or inner fenders, and a whole lot of gasser attitude. People loved that car.

Now have an O/T elcamino that runs 12s on the street. People really love that it's actually badass, and not another 350 4bbl poser, which is an epidemic in the elcamino world.

Bet those 2 cars combined would be pretty damn cool.

I have a 59 2 door and pondered that as well. I think the best look for a gasser is an early to mid 50's car. Gassers are killer but need to be built with a smaller car. The Camino needs to be lowered on a set of chrome reverse rims with wide whites for a beach cruiser look or a set of astros with skinny whites.

Any chance you have some pics of the belair, would love to see it! I just picked up a belair last week that used to be a drag car and haven't decided exactly what I want to do with it yet. I'm at work now, but I'll do a post with some pics tomorrow or sunday.
