Ever thought about how easy it is going to be for the Chinese to waltz in and take over here some day?
After shipping us all manner of goods for 20-50 years contaminated with lead, and God knows what other pollutants and contaminants, the children who have grown up playing with toys and eating off of plates and utensils will be having problems. The parents will be having problems, the soldiers will be having problems....and on and on.

I, for one, think the life one good and loyal American pet dog or cat is worth the lives of, oh say, 3-5 hundred Chinese Communists.

Don't ever think all this **** is not planned. The Orientals think in terms of decades and centuries. These are scout and probe missions checking our security limits in every area for possible introduction of deadly chemicals, heavy metals, etc. into our environment.

  7. Wow. Another bash China thread. I have no problem with bashing China, but isn't this a Hot Rod board? I still remember the ****storm that developed when I mentioned seeing some gaming chairs in a Wal-mart that reminded me of some of the seats used in traditional customs, right down to the pleated vinyl covers on them. I didn't even look at the ****ing tags on them to see where they had been made, I just thought it might save someone some effort on an interior project even if the seats were too ****py to use in a car, you could take one apart and copy it in better materials.

    So:

Harbor Frieght Fuses ****, don't buy fuses that say Made In China anywhere on them, problem solved. I'm not sure why you'd buy fuses there anyhow... I go there for specialty tools I may use once, or twice, ever, and if I break them so be it when 5 ****ty ones are still cheaper than one good one and gets the job done.

I will try to keep this on topic;),
I grew up in an area that was 60% caucasian 38% Latin and 2% other and O% Asian. This was pre 1976 and the fall of Saigon, The Cambodian War-Boat People and of course the ever changing politics thanks to Mr. Nixon in 1972 which led the U.S.'s Open for Take Over before the British left China in 1997. Really their lives hasn't declined in anyway, but many long term residents have if you live in the greater San Gabriel Valley of the Los Angeles region of the State of Calif.

Many lives have changed immensely around this area, There is absolutely no place to eat and if you saw how many bridal (yeah right!) shops we have where there once were barber shops, hardware stores, Pie & Burger restaurants and of course Pete & Jakes just to mention a few you'd think that you were in another country.

There is a 70% Asian Population now and probably 25%Caucasian/Latin blend & 5% other. So where does the "seeking the American Way Of Life come in? I have a quick lil answer as to why we are in this mess. I will use a personal example.

Here I am more than 10yrs younger than I am now and I really was seeking a way to get the Cyclone line back into production.
Most everyone I spoke with said that it was going to cost a fortune to redo patterns-some from scratch others restored. To get em cast
would nearly cost me a nut or two:eek: !

I took this pattern over to one of our Hot Rodding Pioneers & son.
This was Bill & Steve Burke-(sweet 16 belly tank fame).
Steve gives it a looksee and immediately tells me that this would need to be cast in China-Taiwan in order to make any kind of a profit. Bill agreed! . I said Hell No! Bill and Steve both have been encroached upon in a very serious way.

At this point I worked with my 80 yr old pattern maker and we decided on someone local here in the greater L.A. area. Look, there was no way in hell that I was gonna take a company that was created here in L.A. in a machine shop that survives to this day in its original location due to their ability to switch from mfg'n of the speed equip line & focus solely on the driveline area of their business.

They never bought or use any bearing end.yoke or tubing if isn't made here. Why the hell would I have changed it then. I don't make a killing doing speed equip, but I have a p***ion for it and I hope to keep that. I get very sick @ times, Infact there is more cancer in my family right now that I care to discuss.

It takes alot to get down to the foundry, but businesses support other businesses, so I do what I can to participate in their continued operation.

The ingot run was not purchased or even controlled by the Chinese, It was the Japanese that buys our recycled metals refines them into ingot 1/2 way out @ sea on a ship and turns around & sells it all back to us @ 5 times its cost to produce. (Think about that next time you buy an American made vintage piece of speed equip). We didn't win any wars pals, especially since we rebuilt that industrial giant.

Back to Harbor Freight Junk, They make some usable stuff & then some not so usable stuff. I recently purchased a OBDII scanner there. They had 3 types on hand @ all different prices, but I have been pricing scanners for a while and this one seems to fit the bill.

Unfortunately it is made in China and for that I feel :(. Unfortunately I can't afford to buy a Rotunda,Tech II or the like though. So even I am to blame @ times. If one was available to me made in the US for an affordable price I would have been on it. In this case I had no choice.

It is a global economy these days, I guess until we reinvest into ourselves, we will be having these stores like HF to fill a need even though y'know that much of their stuff is marginal @ best.

Trade deficit and national debt are two different things. But I know what you are getting at. Keep in mind the 'China' of the 70's & 80's was Japan. Japanese goods were everywhere and they were buying US debt and real estate and everyone was worried. Essentially all that happened was that we helped them industrialize, and the US got economy cars and color tv's (Im still pissed about the economy car thing). China is industrializing, and while scary to some, they have large social poblems (male/female ratio out of balance , clean water shortages etc)that will keep them busy for a while before they are ready to 'taking over'

All that being said, you get what you pay for, regardless of where it is manufactured. Cheap is just that....cheap.

As a retired guy who made his living as a quality control manager I predicted this **** a long time ago. I remember reading an article in the 80s in which it was reported that due to the wretched quality of the refrigerators being made in China to "fix" the problem the Chinese government had the superintendent of the plant that made them publicly executed. Quality control of raw materials simply doesn't exist. The only thing that matters to them is production volume.

It looked like a hammer. The thing i was using, helping a friend with roofing then the face broke off. Tawain. Problem solved. Garbage. The other hammer, USA . In the tool box another USA hammer. The nails drove in with ease.

The heavy vise 60 lbs on the bench in a fab shop looked like a vise. Snap, the base broke off while cranking on some steel. China. Problem solved. Wilton USA.

Conclusion throw it away, it comes back again.

I Buy USA, it works much better for me. I like where it's made, read the labels

Went on a month long trip through china and Tibet last year, believe me most of the consumer goods sold for their own domestic use are as bad or worse then what they send here. One of the highlights of the trip (for the mechanically minded) was a trip to a factory making seed planters. The factory was owned by a farming co-op of villagers that were branching out to make a buck. Nice buildings, etc. we came around a corner and there were four guys squatting in the dirt outside of the building. They were beating bearing races into a part of the machinery using broken 2X4's and old claw hammers. Parts laying around in the dirt etc. it was priceless. A guy traveling with us that had retired from Chrysler corp nearly had the big one when he saw these clowns beating the parts together.

  18. Buy American, that's all. Rags

  19. I had a guy offer me a deal on some made in China tractors. For a 2-cyl, 4-wheel drive tractor a little smaller than a M***ey, brand new, $5500. It ran good and all, but.... will it still run good and be able to work hard in 50 years?

  22. After reading all this about Chinese manufactured items, I see one big problem that is happening. Our land fills are overflowing, caused by Americans thowing away all the broken, inferior, made in China-Tiawan items!

I think it's too late. Walk into a Wal-Mart, and I don't think anything in there is made in the USA, even alot of the employees aren't made here. (just a little joke,...sort of)
Walk into a Harley Davidson dealership and start flipping over all the accessories to look on the back....Taiwan baby!

Fuses that aren't fuses are fires waiting to happen, maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, maybe not for several years. A hungry attorney could give Harbor Freight some serious food for thought.
Again, the Orientals thinking in long terms rather than our hurried today and tomorrow thinking.

The other day on the news they were talking about china manufacturing cars and sending them to mexico and then importing them to the uus to avoid som kind of fee and or inspection. If you ask me if it has a motor and wheels china shouldn't have anything to do with it, its just an accident waiting to happen...punn intended.

You get what you paid for! When your car catchs fire what will you put the flames out with.... O.K. now who knows where your fire extinguisher was made? Or the chemicals inside it?
Or how about, trade is a two way street. The U.S. companies that order this junk often specify the quality = they want to be compe***ive in their local markets, so cheap as possible is the order of the day.
Why don't you do like they do in France? when the french people get pissed of they take to the streets and demonstrate in front of the stores until something gets done. Oh!... right I forgot you guys already pissed the french off when you had a campaign against them for not supporting you in a silly war of your own making. They gave you some friendly advise, and you took to the streets and flamed them, more freedom fries? anyone.
You are busy squandering your greastest gift... freedom. Your forebears sacrificed a lot to win it, and you piss it up against the wall buying ever more and ever cheaper ****.
Meanwhile your government is p***ing more and more laws that restrict your freedom in the important areas of life but allowing you much more freedom to corrupt yourselves.
In a famous comment on Comrade Nikita Krusechovs tour of America from Russia, in I think 1959, he commented to Vice President Nixon, after observing Americas gluttony " you are digging your own graves, we will merely bury you ".

I do agree that most of the China merchandise is ****, however, some of the blame has to be put on the importers bringing the junk into North America. Most of the raw materials (metal) used to produce the junk Chinese tools comes from here, so theoretically it should cost pretty close to the same to make a quality tool no matter where it is made.... enter the importer who wants to make a profit.....once you factor in the shipping, taxes, tariffs, etc, etc, he needs the product to be made for 1/4 of the cost to make money, he tells his overseas supplier what he is willing to pay, and they build it accordingly.
Its supply and demand, and as long as we keep buying it , they will keep producing it
