I've got TONS of room in front of my carport to build a temporary spray booth to paint my '34. I'm thinking I can paint this car myself right at home. Does anybody have any ideas? I've got a big tent I can modify with visquine and duct tape. Can I use a shop vac to **** out the dust and fumes? I'm using two pack polyurethane, yeah the dangerous stuff. Any ideas or pics would be helpful.
2x4 or pvc pipe frame. clear plastic sheeting, box fan blowing outward and air fiters at the opposite end. elpolacko built one to shoot his truck. had some pics of it on the thread just before viva. jerry
Box fan huh? I never would've thunk. PVC is certainly cheap enough. I dunno, I'm just entertaining the idea even though a pal's offered to paint in in a proper paint booth. I'm just worried about driving my car without a windshield, no lights etc and spending a week color sanding between coats. I'd much rather do everything at home because the fridege is really close by. Should I use regular AC filters? BTW, it was really meeting you at VLV Jerry.
[ QUOTE ] 2x4 or pvc pipe frame. clear plastic sheeting, box fan blowing outward and air fiters at the opposite end. jerry [/ QUOTE ] Exactly the way I am going with mine... Couple of 2x4s, Clear Poly sheeting, couple of box fans and some home air filters.. Works great!!
There was apicture how-to on the HAMB a week or two ago about painting a car and the temp booth too. I don't remember who posted it.
The filters are to clean the incoming air of dust and other airborn junk. I would think the biggest and cheapest filters you can find would work just fine. Try Dollar store or one of those discount places. I thought the Custom was getting paint, not the hot rod. Good Luck.
I meant to say the '54 Chevy, flt blk. The '34's many moons away from getting paint, if ever, right now it's fun just driving her. Folks I'm really close to squirting some paint on the old Chevy, I'm jonesing.
NADS, My friend has had his "temp booth" up for like a year now....lol. It is one of those "instant garages" from like cosco.....It was 150.00. He takes painters plastic sheeting and tapes the gaps at the floor closed and uses a box fan. He hoses down the floor and lets her rip. Painted like 5 cars in it. FONZI
Nads Check with your local tool rental companies and ask about renting an explosion proof fans. Personnaly I have shot some bikes with Imron and used an old box fan but all it takes is the right mix and a spark to go POW.
Painted the 37 in my garage using a temporary booth. As simple as stapling up heavy gauge plastic. The only thing about using a box fan is it will cause the paint fumes to become flammable. Walla! instant flatblack!
A local fella built one in his garage ... check out these photos: http://www.grabercars.com/Images/03-03-04/index.html -Sven
The temp booth I put up looks very similar to Ian's. Cost me about $150.00 for all the lumber, hardware and plastic. Worked well enough... Link to pictures.
And how flammable is polyurethane paint, it can't be as bad as lacquer? Does anyone know how long Nason two pack takes to dry? Is it comparable to enamel? ElPolacko, I can't find the paint booth pictures on your site. It's nice to see that you use cheap and free newspaper for masking.
there are about five pages worth of pictures there. This page has more shots of the booth... Page three
ElPolacko, that truck made me cry, it was just so damn gorgeous. Hey Glenn is it true you sold your Willys? Didja even get to drive it?
Overspray is the man. He posted this just a week or so ago check it out. He has another TECH post on spraying you should read as well before doing your work, at least I got a lot of good information from them. Happy paintin'. Shootin' a Track "T" (garage painting 101)
