Has anyone ever heard of this car? I do not know much about the class ( other than my father quit watching drag racing when they went extinct...), except that Fiats, Bantams, Buckets, etc..are the cars I commonly see...Small, short wheel base, early cars...Was this quite an oddity? I beleive the Driver/owners??? name ( from the story excerpt ) was Jeff Courtie? Do I have the facts wrong? Does anyone remember this car? Or, for that matter, any other fullsize/door car Altereds?
just tryed some different search terms, and came up with a pic of it, but it is the same one I saw...I would love to see more of this car, and hear any info, if anyone has any...as well as other full-size/full bodied Fuel cars...I had no idea...cool.
I remember one in (I think) Car Craft about a thousand years ago. It was during their "street freak" phase. Big old woodie with a killer (blown, if I recall correctly) motor. This was before pro street became a big deal; probably late 60s or early 70s.
It wasn't an AA/Fueler or fuel altered. Instead, it was patterened after the gassers of that era. I think it was featured in Rod & Custom as one of thier "highboy's of the month" back in the late 60's. If I'm not mistaken, I believe the car is still around the SoCal area, and is being restored.
That is the one. It also WAS a Fuel car, the one pictured here, anyway...thats the one I was reading about...or at least according to class designation...It still is listed as holding a record for AA/FA in '68...according to draglist.com...weird...which translates to: COOL...for me.
OK I read the draglist.com and saw that the Olds ran 10.50 in 1968 on fuel. Other altereds were running in the 7s and 8s at the same time. Cool car. No record holder.
given that I also have a 48 olds woodie I have been following this car quite some time it was on ebay a few years ago.. and was in so cal still.. the wood was in rough shape..I am not sure who currently has it.. I was contacted by a NWC member who was attempting to recreate the car.. fwiw.. it was the "worlds fastest woodie"
...this was brought up awhile back, rumor has it that Thom Taylor, the great artist, owns and is restoring it. I've alwaysl liked that car.,
That car's on my all time top ten list.Several years ago I met a guy who owned it at the time and he told me the wood was in bad shape and loose from all the hard shifts.
I thought I remembered reading that somewhere too. It may have been that he just knew who owned it though...
sorry...my mis-wording... not a record holder, but noted in the top 100. either way, a very interesting car...
