Hey gang! I just bought a Ford 9" with 28 spline axles, 11inch drums, 5 x 5.5 bolt pattern and big bearings. I want to center the housing (not the driveshaft yolk) for clearance issues with the stock model A crossmember and spring I'm using in my 28! The housing is 56.5 inches wide, axle flange width is 61.5 inches wide and the axles "both" measure out at 30 inches long. In order to center out the housing I will have to narrow one side 2 inches. I am guessing that I will also have to lose 2 inches of the axle (which has no material left for resplining). Any ideas where I could get a used 5.5 inch bolt pattern 28 spline axle that is 28 inches long. Any ideas as to what this might have come out of originally (Axle tag is W0M-JT with a 3.50 ratio). Thanks in advance. J.

Bishop - Can you give me an idea of the cost for the shaft Thx James

  5. Pull the axles and measure the lengths. Maybe another short side will fit.Other than that someone may have the axle lengths from a Mitchell or a Hollander manual.

did this on my model a with a granada 8" ...centered the housing but used truck axles and ends....1 long 1 short...wheel to wheel ended up i think 56".....not worth all the stuff ....(should have used a 9" housing ) but i had a 8" housing and center and needed to use it....think it was 110 for the housing...and 150 or so on the axles....and i think 85 for new bearings....hope it helps.....brandon:D

  7. ad mine narrowed 10 inches with new axles and bearing from the Dutchman in portland. don't know the cost I just traded out some labor.

This is from the Moser web site ...

We can cold spline almost any shaft up to 60 Rockwell in hardness that has enough material to cut full depth splines. Our machining capabilities include shafts up to 3" in diameter and lengths up to 48". All resplining is done cold so no annealing or heat treatment is required.

    Single Axle
    $65 each

    One Pair
    $110 pair

2 to 5 pair (at the same time)
    $100 pair

6 or more pair (at the same time)
    $90 pair

Go here for more information ... :)

The driver side axle from an Early Bronco is right at 27". I know that isn't 28, but it might be closer than what you have.

If that will work, I may have one you can have. I will have to see which side it is. But mine is not a big bearing. i don't know if the only difference is the bearing on a 28 spl. or of the axle is different too.

Don't forget that if you center the housing the axles will be different lengths because of the offset pinion, and If you center the pinion the housing (center) will not be centered.

IMO, looks best with the housing centered. Especially if you can see it from behind.

The legendary "Cook's Machine Works" in Los Angeles narrowed, centered and trued the ends on the one pictured. They rule.

    Happy motoring,
    Rob.

If you want to keep the 5 1/2 bolt pattern you may want to look at ealy bronco. You said your rear is 61.5 overall and your take 2 inch off of on side so you would need to find a rear that is 4 inches narrower and the early bronco is 58 which is close. alot of the early bronco rears are large bearing and use 11 inch brakes.

And other idea is to find 31 spline axles and have them resplined. The 31 spline axles are used alot to respline to 28. Alot of your 1973 and newer ford pickups use 31 spline axle. They are also large bearing.

Actually, if you center the housing, the axles will be the same length, but the pinion will be off set. If you center the pinion, the housing will be off set, and the axles will have a 4" difference in length.
