I'm about to rebuild my 292 for my 64 pick up. I'm thinking of buying one of John Mummerts stroker Kits. I'm also kicking around the Idea of a blower. I've seen the McCulloch superchargers but I was thinking something along the lines of a 6-71 roots blower. I can't find any info on roots style blowers being put on Y-blocks. I'd love any kind of info, pictures, or general Thoughts and ideas on the sublect. I was thinking a one off manifold and crank pulley would be the extent of custom fabrication if there is nothing available on the market. Might be worth looking into. But it seems like someone would have done this by now. Mike
Here is a picture of one over here in NZ with a 4/71 blower on it. I believe it has a 4 barrel manifold with an adaptor plate to take the blower. You would probably be better off with a 4/71 - it would be a bit overkill to use a 6/71.
Yeah ... the same guy was listing it over and over. He initially wanted about $700 for it, but his price gradually came down. I wonder if he ever sold it.
There are a few original Cragar 4-71 intakes for the Y....very, very rarely one gets auctioned on eBay. Expect to pay, in the words of Uncle Scooby, "stupid rare" money for one. I have seen one completely fabbed from scratch...& a couple of modified 4 barrel intakes. Not too tough, & any of the blower companies could help you out with the main drive & idler setup. Expect to fabricate or modify all the accessory drives. Another option....use one of the small Weiand blowers like the 177 on a modded 4bbl. intake. Lastly....some food for thought. About 7-8 years ago, a guy in Canada used a B&M SBC blower AND SBC INTAKE on a Y. Though the ports are 90 degrees to the Y block ports, they are physically in more or less the same place. As I recall, a machine shop made wedge adapter plates to compensate for the angle difference & width, then fabbed up the drive. Not overly tough to do & it ran pretty well on the dyno, with final tuning still to be done. He wrote it up for Y Block Magazine, but suddenly dropped off the radar....& if I recall correctly we found out later that he had been murdered in a mugging gone wrong. I'd have to go back & check old issues.
I came across this a few weeks ago, but don't know anything about it: http://www.bigalstoybox.com/plate.htm (it's not that $700 pos on ebay) I have a 671 loosely mocked up on top of my 292 with a ford dual quad intake. These are the problems I can see with the adapter setup: - Thermostat hits blower or adapter - 671 is too long for the engine (it has to hang off the front of the engine a decent amount in order to clear the distributor) Good luck with your project!
Hey thanks guys for all the info. This board is great for finding out stuff! Yeah, I actually meant to type 4-71 my mind must have been drifting when I wrote that. Homespun, I like that wedge adapter idea. that sounds like a pretty economical way to go. Brudwich, Thanks for the good info! Mike
If you want, I'll dig up the articles & photocopy them...or, you can order back issues from the publisher. I believe all the issues are still available, but I may be wrong about that. It's a small, one man outfit.
Some ideas: http://victorylibrary.com/mopar/blower.htm Some thoughts on which blowers: http://victorylibrary.com/supercharger/super-choices3.htm On drive methods: http://victorylibrary.com/supercharger/super-drive4.htm On changes to the engine: http://victorylibrary.com/supercharger/super-engine5.htm
There was a fella at the Fredericksburg Swap Meet a few weeks ago with a complete blower setup for a Y-Block. It was a centrifugal charger, intake, fuel pump, carbs, everything for $2,500 and didn't look like it had ever been mounted. He also had a killer 2x4 intake with some funky looking 4bbls carbs. I wish I got his number.
It is fairly easy (though not cheap) to mount a Paxton on one, ala the '57s. The "Hoosier Hurricane" '57 Ford is running in the 11's in the 1/4 with a fairly-close-to-stock blown 312......& there is a Y-powered altered in the 9's (unblown, but I forget the details...lotsa work. )
I'm in the early stages of mocking up my newly aquired (Thanks Flatman!) 6V71 on one of my 292's. There are enough 671 vs 6V71 differences/technical issues to warrant a book just on that alone BUT, all that aside, the 6V71 rotors and case are three inches shorter than the 671 blower case. The shorter length should lend itself well to the clearance issues....as will any adapters needed to mate the blower as they will raise the blower off the manifold and above the thermostat housing. I've thought about the GM manifold on the Y-block and will be checking out that avenue as well....but a better way may be to just adapt a plenum box or adapter plate on a Y-block dual quad intake (or maybe cut up a Blue Thunder intake) and adapt to the blower to that. I'll be photodo***enting the progress along the way. Stay tuned..... -Bigchief.
No pics at this computer....I will let you know in another week or two how I feel about Mummerts stroker kit, before seeing how it runs I'm kinda leaning towards the fact that it can be done cheaper but don't hold me to that just yet. This is the second time around for this motor, first one broke a rod and took everything else along with it......292 stroked with Cragar 4-71 setup. more details to come when the pedal hits the floorboard.
