also will it be a difficuly job to do at home? a tranny swap and clutch installation?considering i have no ramp or lift and only an old heap of a cherrypicker

So, you want a stick in the Rover? Or are you swapping the 3.5 into something else? Ether way the cheapest I have heard is to get the 3 speed bell housing and make an adapter plate (on the back of the bell housing between it and the trans) to fit a T5 out of a 94-95 Mustang T5. I haven't done this myself, but I have a co-worker that has all the parts and is gonna stick it in one of his heaps.

My Dad is running an Olds 215 and he mated a leter model S-10 5 speed to his. Had to elongate the monting holes in the ears, but it bloted right up and has been working great for pushing 4 years now.

A '62-'63 standard bell housing has the common Muncie/Saginaw/Borg Warner pattern. The '61 bell only has the small T-86 pattern. Neither one is easy to find. There's currently a N.O.S. Schiefer flywheel for it on Ebay.

    D & D Fab......

They can fix you up or at least give u an education.
Borg Warner t-50 is the 4-speed I have that was in a 62 F-85. I have a three speed bell avalible that has been repaired and should work. I'm not selling the 4-speed stuff. That goes in the Jetfire. Also have 2 of the gennie transmissions for the Olds, Buick....

Hey, Old Rod, R U Bob, the guy I bought this engine from a few years back? Yes, it is running fine. The carb didn't work out, so I got a 390 Holley, and it's perfect.
About the trans - my son is right. I used the orginal bell that you gave me with the engine. I'd heard an s-10 5 spd was almost a bolt-in, and sure enuf. Bolt pattern is identical, but S-10 bolts were metric, so had to drill the holes in the ears the next size up English. The tranny inputshaft flange is exact same od as the id in the bell hsg, so from there it's a bolt in. I was amazed.

I first used the Olds clutch, but the old B&B 3 finger was big time pedal pressure. So I pulled that and used an S-10 clutch (diaphragm), then had to have the flywheel redrilled for the S10 pressure plate pattern. EZ pedal pressure, and the S10 clutch does fine behind the 215. The little engine motates the '29 A on down the road and it steers like it has power steering (it doesn't).

Biggest challenge of the whole deal was the clutch linkage. Not much room for anything under an A floorboard!

Aren't Rovers 4 wheel drive? Could be a totally different transmission to mate with a transfer case.

I'm lazy, I prefer an automatic. If you are going to do all the work of swapping trannies, go for the 5 spd

Rover has been using this engine since the mid 60s. Rover also build passenger cars and Triumph used the engine in the TR-8.
I have 2 automatics and a 3 speed bell if needed. Have the Auto flywheels too.

I think it is fairly straight-forward to swap the trans for a stick - you'll need the bellhousing, flywheel, clutch and pilot bearing. I would guess it would be easier to find another Rover on Malta than a US vehicle? SD1 five-speeds are quite popular, but some versions are rated better than others. You could try the UK NSRA forum, as they have a Tech section (here's one recent thread: http://www.nsra.org.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=40717 ).

What model is it - that might be where the hard work comes in? You're going to need the third pedal and mounts, and may have to modify the tunnel.

    I would use a S10 T5 myself if I was going with a manual.

I currently have a project that will get a Buick motor and one that I will try to shoe horn a Olds motor in. The Buick will have a 200R4 and the olds will have a TH200(due to its small size)
