http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=local&id=5555313 what the hell is wrong with these people? keep it on the track, where it belongs
Whats the last thing a redneck says before he crashes his monster truck into a crowd . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Hey, Yall watch iss!
I;ve been to quite a few monster truck shows done by monster jam and at every event they have a remote shut off switch operated by officials that kills the truck dead if anything looks like its going wrong and they test it everytime they fire a truck up. I wonder if this wasn't used and that is why people got hurt.
Once again city officials will try to blame injuries caused by their stupidity for allowing an exibition on a city street lined with spectators on driver error or mechanical failure.
Crazy, I guess we know better but the average 'Joe Blow' out there doesn't. They come out to see the cool display not understanding the danger and 'WOOMPA!' they get run down. I remember years ago a drag racer was given permission to do a 'Burn out' in the main street of Melbourne. Romeo Capritani was the driver, he did it and nothing went wrong but if it did there were thousands of people there. No barrier 1000hp+ Funny Car, un prepped road................... ugh! Yeah I was stupid enough to go watch but I stayed behind the car.
My guess is they didn't have such a device in use at this "simple demonstration". At least nobody was killed.
it was a customer appreciation day at the local napa it was probably the 18 year old guy who turns the rotors in the "machine shop" truck tk
I do shows for Monster Jam and this was NOT a Monster Jam event!!!! Advance Auto Parts is a major corp sponsor of Monster Jam.... All monster trucks are required to have a Remote Ignition Interrupter, at MJ events there are 2 people with the shut down radios on each truck. Every truck goes through a Tech inspection before it is allowed to compete. And we also test each truck before each run. Yellow tape is not a proper crowd protector!!!!!!!!!What was the promoter thinking............... This is a sad day for all the people that got hurt, thank God that no body was fatally injured......My prayers are with them.....
Boy, I kinda wonder how many situations like this, in this year alone, are going to pop up about some of the dumbest **** you can do with high horsepower vehicles... Its going to take a lot of people dying or getting seriously hurt to convince the population to stop doing these kinds of things in a public street/parking lot setting rather than a race track/arena where it WAS meant to take place to keep people safe.. Just crazy... NEVER under estimate stupid people in m*** numbers!
Here we go again... at this rate, I think anyone worrying that some kid with a "poorly-built rat rod" will destroy the the automotive hobby for all of us...can allay those fears... It appears small town officials, and "professional" drivers are taking care of that. This **** does not belong in the street.
I am surprised there hasn't been an accident with one of those monster trucks that gives people rides. They look way too top heavy to me.
At the all chevy show in Omaha this year I seen them fire up and drive a modified stock car thru the crowd to the other side of the dealership.I walked in the opposite direction when it started. Nothing happened but I sure felt uncomfortable.I hope everyone fairs well that was hurt by the truck.
The first thing I thought when I heard this last night was that I hope everyone makes it out alright.... two of the people were mother and daughter I guess.... I always feel bad for spectators who become injured - especially since they are doing nothing wrong... sounds like they were where they were supposed to be... didn't jump any fences to get here. Second thing.... WTF? These ____ _____ drivers/promoters shouldn't have ever even considered this! (You can fill in the blanks with your favorite choice of wordage ) There's a reason that drag strips have walls and don't allow people in between the cars. There's a reason that Monster Trucks are in an arena... with big walls! And again.... people aren't allowed to stand by the cars they are crushing. There's a reason that drivers have roll bars, fire suits, helmets, fire supression systems, etc.... I have a feeling that because of these accidents, the G-Man is going to start cracking down on everybody.... hot rods, pro street, 4x4 trucks... because they'll lump all "motor vehicles" together. "Well... your car looks like that one that ran over all those people... it must be dangerous!" Oh well... just my $.02 rant of the day... Kamp
They are actually bottom heavy, those military axles weigh a bunch, not to mention the tire and rim. I would never put myself or my family on one of those. Stupidity and anything with a motor do not mix. Monster trucks is the pro wrestling of motorsports imo. They have gotten very high-tech, but its still silly to me. I've witnessed a "world record" holding "pro" driver do a freestyle exibition in an old rodeo arena with wooden fences lined with spectators after drinking several screwdrivers .
I agree with all of the above. BUT- As the driver- you ARE responsible that the situation/environment is SAFE. I would have said "No WAY" am I driving this truck with spectators that close. Thank goodness nobody was killed. And my hopes and prayers go out to those that were injured.
Bottom-heavy...from watching some of these things on TV, that sounds right...it looks like control problems on the things come from the axles going nuts underneath, unsprung weight far beyond the ability of the sprung part to control it.
In the late 70's, a kid I knew had a pro-street camaro that was to be used in a movie. The filming was in Northridge, Ca. They were filming by Cal State Northridge. During a break in the film, the kid did a static burnout but the throttle stuck. The car took off and center punched a light pole killing the kid.
Sooooo.......what's everyone's feelings about a vintage top fuel car or altered being fired up at a "traditional" car show????? Just curious.......
Actually, Josh, the couplers are always removed on the cacklefest cars. People are not allowed to stand close to them and they have burst panels and blower restraints to keep the huffer from sailing away. These lessons were usually learned the hard way, BTW.
There is risk in everything. Allowing vehicles like monster trucks and Pro Mod drag cars to perform exhibitions on the street is extremely risky.
I've been to shows in OK where they did "fire ups" and each time I thought about "what ifs". The vehicle owners were careful to keep a good clear zone around their vehicles and didn't go crazy holding open throttles. It probably is dangerous but so is getting behind the wheel to drive to the show. In most states driving on public streets is more dangerous than standing 25 feet away from a top fuel or altered being lit off except on your ears...
If I remember correctly those 2 1/2 ton military axles weigh in excess of 1,000 lbs . They also have no easy way to adapt brakes, soooo they just use a disc on the driveshaft . Now I'm talking back-yard-Bubba monster-mudders here, not "pro" trucks. If you think ratrods are scarry you should work in the 4x4 industry for a while .
