I have had 4 air units from Southern Rods,,,,,the first one worked great ,,,,Zero problems.

The 2nd. was in a 40 sedan,,,,worked good but I scrimped on price and bought one a little too small for the job.

The 3rd. is installed in the wagon and hasn't hit the road yet.

I just finished installed one in my truck,,,,Shane does stand behind what HE sells,,,He has proved that to me on several different oc***ions.

As for V A units,,,I used 2 of those in the past and never had a problem.

    I support HAMBers when I can,,,HRP

I have two Southern Air units. The first one I bought had a leak in the evaporator core that we had to solder before we could charge the system. (poor quality control) Kind of a ***** to take apart under the dash, but we fixed it. It is a a 37 Ford flatback and works very well.
The second unit is an a 48 F1. It works good but the evaporator will freeze up in that one if you leave the thermostat on high. It needs to cycle more to stop the freeze up. I figure it is because the cab is so small.
Both of these systems are R12.
Both these systems are the vent in the dash variety and have two squirrel cage motors.
A few years back I had contact with a guy in Florida selling these units on Ebay. His comment to me was that all these units are being bought from the same manufacturer. What I have looked at in the booths at the Nats and other shows they seem very similar.
One thing I don't like about any of the units is the Thermostats are not sensitive enough. Seems they could do better in that department.
I am looking to add a unit to my bullet nose Stude. Have yet to call our man on the board selling air units. I need a unit that will heat and cool this as a Stude is a fairly big car.
    My 2cents.

Pretty much sums it up, Old Air Products is good stuff, as is Vintage Air. Stay as far away from Southern Air as you possibly can.

You could try to experiment with different expansion valves to stop the freezing as they regulate the flow of refrigerant into the evap more or less. They have some very small part numbers on them. They all look the same but actually are different.

I put a Street Rod Air kit in my car and I really like it. Make sure your car is insulated and the doors are sealed. Position the ducts to blow the cool air as directly onto you and the p***enger as you can. Do yourself a favor and purchase the whole thing in kit form. I piece mealed mine together and ended up with a cheap Chinese knockoff compressor that would not turn. I ended up going back to SRA and purchased a genuine Sanden.

I have used VA twice (34 5W & 56F100). On both those cars there is little room left when putting behind the dash. Makes it a bear to service if required unless you pull the unit. I just recently installed a HyperCool unit in my 49 Chevy pickup. It uses vacuum switches instead of the latest solenoid servos but seems to work well. It is the heat/AC/defrost model and I still have a 3" deep glove box. I'm using the GM compressor since this is my daily driver. I need to insulate the cab better to get better performance on the AC side. I bought it from Mike Brown at RainbowProductsOnLine.com out of NC and he sells several brands including VA and stands behind what he sells. Good luck.

Years ago I received a catalog that requested from Air-Tique... inside was several religous pamphlets.

I dropped the company an email mentioning I had received these pamphlets and I was curious if this was company policy.

The answer I received was 'yes'.... a few more email messages and i learned that the Air-tique owner believed that 'god' created and owned everything on earth.

I do not do business with a company that uses religion as a tool to promote it's self.
