before you finally got off your lazy ass and replaced that non-working sending unit? Looks like I know what I'm doing tomorrow, damn it. It's gotta be at least a dozen at this point. This time I didn't have the spare gas can in the trunk.

Good point. Mine likes to screw with me. One time it will have plenty of gas, then after another few bucks, all of a sudden the shut off point on the gauge is in a different location. Little bastard.

I've run out of gas so many times I get gas cans for Christmas.

Cool story I heard from a couple of weeks ago. It happened at the Syracuse show. A couple from Canada (not the funny part) had their car stolen on Sat night. The car was found about 50 miles away the next day. The thieves ran out of gas! The gas gauge was broke and read 3/4 of a tank. The car was returned unharmed.....great story!!

Ha! That's great. I think the only person who my car is worth anything to is me, so I probably don't have to worry about it.

I ran out of gas in my 65' Biscayne. It has a 500hp 454 with a Richmond 6 speed. Called a tow company. Driver like my car so much, he poured in a couple of gallons and refused to charge me. Installed a new sender that weekend.

Fuck, when I was 16, I had a 1967 Chevy wagon with a 396, I had both rear tires go flat, and ran out of gas at the same time. I still like to run the tank to the RED, It pisses my wife off.

I've also learned with airbags I can dump the front and raise the back to get me to a gas station....sorta works as a reserve.

Worst time I ran out of gas was cruising A1A in Daytona Beach for the Turkey run. No place to go. We just got out and pushed it to the hotel. The streets were so packed it was easy to keep up with traffic. We even got help from people in the crowd. I had to buy the beer that night! :)

I swear that twice in my stupid teenage life, I ran out of gas and coasted into a gas station right next to a pump. No BS.

  14. Always seem to run out ,gauges or not , A couple of times was able to coast to a station,( now that is close timing) Other times an understanding wife and some good friends and a cell phone usually comes to the rescue, And take it as a voice of experience , never , never criticize your rescurer for taking what seems to be a long time(when you are on the side of the road waiting) to get there with the gas can, , just smile real big and say thanks ,Never leave home without the cell,,,,,,

  15. Did it while "adjusting" my carbs. Thought I royally fucked up (my first time with multi carb set up) and after a quick panic realized I could have run dry.

Anyone have a way of setting up a gage in a spun aluminum tank? Didn't want the sending unit bung added to the tank - its all exposed in the bed of my RPU. Only thing I can think of is a simple float like in a snowmobile.

My funny story...I was 17, I hadda SHWEET pimp daddy 73 lincoln MKVIII 2 door (grandma car 48K on the clock) still had the original white leather interior and shit brown paint...and still looked good, I wanted it pro-streeted and worked my ass off all summer to afford the welding (got the parts and rims at swap meets) Then I traded off a Datsun truck that I pro-streeted (no motor) for a blower....I was SET (what better for a low compression 460?)...problem was, fuel guage was broke, the town was small and I threw a few bucks a day in it, one day I mis-judged how much I drove and ran outta gas, on the bottom of the hill I was coasting down (4 mile hill) was a gas station, I coasted right up to the pump, paid the man my last 10 bucks in my pocked (and actually got more than ten gallons of gas) and went to fire it up....no go, the carbs were bone dry and wernt primed...hmmm what to do I thinks, I aint got no more $ for gas....(lightbulb goes off) I havent cleaned out my back seat in some time, popped out the back seat and scrounged up 16 cents, went and paid the man 16 cents on pump 3, took the aircleaner off and stuck the gas nozzel right in the carbs and put 8 cents in each carb....fired right up after that.....gas man sure did give me a weird look though...

Hasn't happened to me in years even though I have a couple of cars with broken gages/sending units.

I used to do this constantly when I was a teenager, sending unit was fine but the wallet was broken.

GAUGE?? You got a gauge to tell how much fuel you got?

    JEEEEEZZZZZZZ???

This place is gettin' too ''Gold chain'' for me.... I gotta stick. Sometimes I just look in there.... but I use a flashligh 'cause matches..... oh you know

Biggest problem here is that litre-0-gas cost the same as a Gal in the US and don't go nearly as far.

I used to run out of gas all of the time. One day my dear old dad said to me
"It doesn't cost any more to keep the top half full than it does to fill the bottom half of the tank." Since I began listening to him I never run out of gas.

  23. Affirmative to that, good buddy! I've also coasted out of gas up to a pump.
Have also spent my last $1 for gas hoping it would be enough to make it home.

  24. Once, when I was in high school. I was out with a new girlfriend. After she kicked me in the nuts I discovered we had only stalled.

I've run out of gas a bunch of times in various vehicles. The most embarasing time I was in my coupe trying to leave a car show. Going up a steep hill to the exit I stalled it. "Stupid clutch" I think.. After trying to re-start it, I finally get out and check the tank, DOH! Empty.
Now the show announcer is doing a play-by-play over the PA. Great, I think, now everyone knows what a dope I am. But another hot rodder came forward with a big can of gas. When I asked him why he carried a ten gallon can he said he runs out of gas alot. HAHA! Probably a HAMBer and of course he wouldn't take any money. When I brought his can back to his car he wasn't around so I slipped a twenty into his console. Hope he found it before his wife did..ha.
I realized that I was lucky to run out of gas at the show because out on the road nobody would've stopped, unless a hot rodder came by.

I ran out of gas cresting a steep windy hill with blind curves... I had to back about a 1/8 mile down the road in neutral to get to an Agway for my dad to come with a gas can...This was in a pretty hot '65 Ranchero with the factory gauge which was terrible. That's the only time I have done it... Tank is always better than half full.

Ok, Im setting here scratching my head trying to remember when I have run out of gas and I'm thinking 'have I run out of gas at least once or am I really going senile like the wife says'. Actually she wishes I would run out of gas!(me not the car). I do remember the truck couphing once when pulling into a service station, and I remember years ago my sand rail having crap in the fuel line and fixing it on the spot, OK OK here it is if this counts. Kelly and I were test driving a new car last year and had the salesman with us and the Chrysler 300c we eventually bought ran out of gas on the test drive!!! Boy was he embarassed. I think we got a better discount because of it!

Not many. Probably 3 times 20 years.

In HS, I was fortunate enough to run a tow truck from a gas station that was the first (or last) gas for 45 miles.

Lots of the cars I had to service on the highway had already been broken into, had a beer bottle thrown at em, a window shot out, and in one case sitting on blocks without wheels. This was in the middle of Iowa, not NYC.

Fuck running out of gas, I like my car.
