What do you think of this design? I copied/ blended some manifolds I found in old pictures. The runners are the same diameter as the intake ports. The carbs are a bit larger so the round to round reducers are utilized. I still need to get some flanges. The carbs are bbsr's for those who care. I plan to build a log style manifold also to try. Do you think the balance tube is too small? It's a 28 chev head on a 040 over model a engine. A single winfield is a proven solid performer with this combo but who doesn't like an extra carb or two? Got a fan for this three bolt water pump?
I can still do that without hurting anything. It's just tacked pretty much. You are probably right on target. It just looks puny.
hey nice job mate, I'd guess that inlarging the balance tube would make it a bit easier to sort things out in the long run when tuneing in and stuff. well done mate, nice clean job
Thanks for the compliment. Bigger balance tube it is. I got loads of time waiting on the nitty gritty bits on this project anyway.
That's the way I made mine way back when. I used a smaller tube as a balance tube also. There is no real flow through this tube so I don't think it would be restrictive. Edelbrock seems to think they don't need to be the same size as the runners. On a Man-a-fre the balance tubes are tiny compared to the port size. JMO
I used to machine fittings for a large supplier of motorcycle aftermarket compe***ion parts and the balance tube fittings were small. They used neoprene tubing to connect in between the carbs the tubing was about 5/8 " This was for the big Susuki machines. On my manifold I made my balance tube out of 1 1/4" tubing. Sawracer, if you need help with the carb flanges let me know. And remember, there is a FAST hillclimb on the 8 th. of Sept at Devore.
After a talk with the man himself, Neal Jern, I decided to run with what I had. Here is the finished product. Really doesn't seem like much but It was a ****load of work!
Very nice...very clean welds..you should be proud of making your own...thats what the old timers used to do!
do you really need a balance tube? no bike i ever had had them, we just set the carbs up with merc. sticks.
The balance tube is just for equal vacuum anyways. Making them the same size would've just been for looks. You do some great work, sawracer. Nice welds.
It would be different if you already had the motor running, and could compare the performance. The bigger tube might have been a bad thing.
Neal Jern said his motor ran like **** without it. The real deal/worry ill be the cold part of the intake. These bangers really like heat in the intake for part throttle response and idle. I may wrap the crossover tube in a copper tube full of hot coolant.
Hey Sawracer, on my engines with Winfield carbs "B"'s on the flathead and "BB"'s on the Riley they both stumble a little until the temp is 190'.
I bought the 180 degree mandrel bent tube from Fast Eddie's in Orange, cut er up and welded it to some pre made flanges. The cone shapes came from a friend who works in a sheet metal shop. They were done on a brake. A bunch of tiny bends make a radius eventually. I then sanded the kinks out of em. The finish is a fine wire wheel in a 5 " grinder and a little wd 40. Fit is most important or your welds will look like **** and keep on top of the bolt holes as they will move a ton while you are welding. My fit ****ed so I had to grind off a filler weld and put a nice one over that. I used a long bur to finish the inside of the manifold,ie weld boogers etc..
