This here's a photographic story of how my buddy Vic and my day went. First let me show you the object of our attention. Vic's bitch'in `51 F1.

The order of the day was a tranny r & r. The original trans had the syncro let go, and unfortunately our repaired trans seems to have suffered the same fate. We figured we'd try a trans we had on the shelf. So out came the bad one. Yeah ya gotta pull the seat too.

The moment of truth came, and oh how quickley can these old beasts raise you up then smash you against the rocks. Shifted into first gear fine but no dice on the 1- 2 shift! Damn it. Oh well the trans was a bit of an unknown quantity. We checked it out and it looked OK and it seemed to get through the gears by hand when we had it on the bench. But alas it was not to be. This hobby builds character the hard way sometimes. The good news is we're getting real good at swapping trannys on F1's.

Or when eight is'nt enough how about twelve? Yes a running driving `39 Zephyr convertable. You'd be amazed at how smooth this car drives. The combination of the unitized body and the velvety 12 under the hood makes for an unusally tight antique car.

Hey Mike, Thanks for posting the photos of the fun we had with the '51 F-1 today. Ya know what they say, some days you're the windshield and some days you're the bug... Guess we were both the bug today...

  14. Nice toys. Sounds like you could use a trans expert. Hope you have better results with the next one.

I guess so, but in the name of full disclosure let me explain. On the first go round we used a new "offshore" produced syncro and had obvious trouble from the beginning due to poor construction of that part. Next we put a used original Ford syncro in the trans, reassembled, reinstalled and it shifted liked butter for about 6 months. Apparently the same thing happened as the first incident, part of the "dog" or "shoe" fatigue fractured and let go and jammed the syncro. I don't think we had an assembly problem, but hey no one is infalable, especially me. The trans we just tried was us taking a shot with something one of us had. We gave it the visual under the cover and it "seemed" OK. In the truck it was'nt, so we're back to square one.

  17. I'll take 2 please - one for now, one for later. Thanks!

  18. As you can see from the picture, I have an interest in this story. My tranny may need help soon and I know where to take it now.
