A while ago I did a bunch of work on a 67 Jim Davis front engine dragster, to get it to certify to 7.50, and make it look as original as possible. Well, it's a possibility that it's going up for sale and if it does, I am considering buying it. The problem is it has the Davis style front end, which is leaf spring, and it's broken. The local spring shop said they won't make it, as it's a very narrow spring and they said forget about it. I would want to keep it a leaf setup, not torsion, and I am wondering if anyone out there has any suggestions for getting it fixed, or another one. I know there's lot's of FED guys on here.
The car I'm looking at has the exact same front end, only one of the leafs is broken. Nobody local will make me one
I wouldn't imagine duplicating it would be hard, I just want to make sure I go about it the right way. I recieved a pm saying that they've taken a similiar spring and just cut it down to match the length and width, and it worked fine for them. I believe if I do wind up buying the car I will probably do that.
^^ exactly, been used like that in the rockclimbing industry for mad flex, they seem to take the abuse just as well
I'd be more than happy to pay a shop to do it, just nobody around here wants to touch it. I don't want to hack something together either, as the car runs 150 plus mph and is basically whats holding the axle on.
There should be someone totally willing to do that- I had a contact but they moved away- they could make anything with spring steel.
That's exactly what I thought, but it turns out that nobody locally wants to do it. Shouldn't be **** to make it, or cost much either, I don't really know what the issue is.
Are you telling them it is off a race car? My guess if you just brought in the broken spring and handed them the two pieces, and said can you make me one of these, there would be no problem. When you say, 150 MPH, race car, dragster, etc. thier liability alarm goes off.
Look at trailer springs, some of the smaller utility trailers use springs about that size that could be easily modified.
