Would someone be super kind and pull one of the 3 bolts holding the lower mounting bracket of the oil filter canister on their flathead 8BA engine and tell me the dimensions? What thread and length. ? A fellow Hamber will look for me but it might be tomorrow before he gets it, and if someone knows off hand or can get me the dimensions tonight, it will speed up my driving around tomorrow. I'm flying into Miami tomorrow and want to buy these bolts the moment I land, and THEN get to the car to start working on it. I can't believe I'm flying into town just to work on the cars for 2 days then fly right back to Ohio to continue taping the show. Gotta love them projects!!!. Thanks to any and all who can get me these dimensions. I know a store that carries chrome bolts and may have them in stock!!.
Hi, Thanks, If it's just 3 of the head bolts than I guess I can just put the chrome acorn nuts over those and that will do it right? I ask cause I bought a chrome oil filter canister and wanted to make sure the bolts would also be chromed. That helps, thank you very very much.
Here's a pic Ozzie but not very clear in that area. Where the gas line turns toward the front of the engine from the firewall I made a stand to support the gas line. This stand is bolted to the head in one of these bolt holes. The second hole is straight back from that one. These two holes are about 1-1/2" above the top row of headbolts. The third hole is behind the sparkplug wire for #7, between the top two a little lower.
Well maybe some motors were different than others. But I pulled the heads off two different 8BA's in the past month and the stock bracket on stock heads was held on by head bolts.
If it's a stock engine mount filter housing, the lower bolts shout be the short head bolts (7/16"x 2.5") The acorn covers can be a real adventure to install around the bracket I had to use a mallet and a tape covered pinch bar to get them on. Flatman
3/8 x 3/4" NC bolts including a lock washer. He did say 8BA. On an 8BA the top 2 filter bolts wouldn't even hit the head if they were drilled all the way through the head. They'd come out along side the intake manifold above the deck.
well I guess we've established that as usual for Ford there was more than one way of doing it. Here's the one of mine.
Phat could well be right. I think this is a pic of Ozzie's motor; looks stock. On page 2 of this thread. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=150243&page=2 Perhaps only the aftermarket heads have to bosses for the 3/8" bolts.
Two ways were used--I believe it is early vs late, with at least some '49-50's using the earlier type mount on head bolts, most later using three extra holes with small cap screws... A research thing: If messing with olde Fords, get a parts catalog covering the years you are interested in and whatever later years offer interchange.. the info will make life easier in a lot of ways. Bolts that are standard items are listed right below the parts they hold, with a full call-out of sizes and such in back of catalog. This is a big time saver.

I wanted to come in for a day and install the chrome filter holder I got and be done with it, but found that as always someone had modified it in the past and welded the brackets to hold the linkage for the 4 barrel onto it, so I'll have to work with that and see how it can be done. I'll remove the bolts and see which ones I need to get. Thanks again. </TD></TR><TR UNSELECTABLE="on" hb_tag="1"><TD style="FONT-SIZE: 1pt" height=1 UNSELECTABLE="on"> </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
