    Hi All,

I have a 28 Model A firewall I was gonna build an RPU from but all the woody talk lately has been getting to me. If I build a woody, I want it to look cobbled together. I have this image in my head of the thing looking like someone built it out of wooden pallets back in the 60s.

Does anyone have a picture of a woody that looks something like that- Maybe a roth-esk or weirdos type of picture?

Its not really that I want to do the whole fake patina thing, but sometimes the "new wood" look on a woody is a turn off for me.

    Pallets? Are you serious?

Sounds like a waste of a good cowl to me.

An A station wagon body is probably the ONLY body you could get away with making everything slab sided on. If done correctly, it will look legit. This blue woodie is very cool! It might just get you started on another hobby, WOODWORKING. Don't work your wood too much though cause it's bad for the eyesight.

pallets can have really nice wood in them, i have a 34 ford cowl, frame and 29 pontiac cowl and frame that i want to turn into woody's to, i wish someone had nice drawings off all the parts for the 34 woody?, i think a 29 model-a style woody will work for my pontiac. my plan is to build a steel tube framework and hang the wood on that. then there are old houses being torn down all the time to. i have seen a pic of a 29 woody where they curved all the uprights in at the bottom, gave it a nice finished look.

At first glance this looks stock. It's only after I noticed that the doors roll under to meet the splash apron that I realized how custom the body really is. It looks better than pallets though.

Do like budd said, and make a steel inner structure and then find a barn that needs to be torn down and s**** the wood from it, it'd be all gray weathered. Look cool, if you went for the real "Barn Find".

    Great minds.....

I have a 31 cowl and was thinking along the same lines, except a Roadster P/U woody. Pallets are alot of times made of some really good wood. I have seen alot of oak.

I was going to invest in a plainer, and then age the wood. Look around there are a lot of articles, and products for aging wood.

Keep us posted on your progress.

Lincoln logs would probably get the look you are after. They are traditional too! :)

A good friend of mine has a 31 woody with a steel structure which the wood body is mounted to. It looks almost original except that it is chopped 2". The only way you can tell is if it is sitting next to an original version. The steel structure amlost doubles as a Roll Cage, God forbid you would ever need it.

Maybe "pallets" is the wrong word to use? How about "rough sawn"? Is that what you meant? I like the idea and think it would be great!

  15. A buddy of mine did something similar nearly 20 years ago. I wish that I had taken some pics back then. He took a '29 Model A cowl and built a "huckster" body out of used wood. He put a thinned-down green enamel paint on the body (soaked into the old wood and looked like it had been done for years) with black on the fenders and running boards, etc. The end result looked like a fruit/vegetable peddler's wagon that had been in a barn for years. We had a blast with that thing! My buddy's name is Rick and we referred to his creation as a "Rickstoration" (as opposed to a restoration). Good luck on your project.

HMMMMM............ A woody......... wonder if my local lumber yard or feed store would give up some pallets, most of them are maple or oak and if you ran a sander over them or a planer and a sander noone would be the wiser. Looks like I may have an Idea for a later project. Great, now I need another frame and suspension, guess I might have to make a side trip to Erie on the way to the HAMB Drags. Oh well, gives me somethin to do while waitin on parts. Anybody got pics of one that has been chopped ALOT, I've always liked the surf wagon look but haven't seen alot except for my trips to Florida and some pics from my cousin in So. Cal.

Now this is what I'm talkin' about! Except I'd go with tires outside the body and more square lookin wood for the outside pieces. Wouldn't take much, stain some marine grade ply and some pressure treated 1X4's and WALLA! You'd have yourself a kick*** woody body after you put it all together.

cool! a homemade woody. I will stick this in the back of my mind as a future project. it might be a lot of fun to build and turn some heads as well if done right.

  23. Some pallets are made from Mahogany, hardwood lumber places get alot of Lauan sheets and other solid hard woods on solid Mahogany pallets, usually from Indonesia. These pallets ussually get trown in the dumpster, unless somebody there already figured out what material they are made of.

Okay maybe I shoudl clear it up a bit- I didnt mean I was actually going to build it from Pallets- I only meant I wanted somethign that looked like it was thrown together out of what someone had. Imagine if the Beverly Hillbillies made their family flatbead into a woody wagon- imagine what that would look like.

There are tons of old houses torn down around here with the "Aged" wood on them and i actually planned to use that.

I have used pallets for structure parts and braces. There is some really nice and HARD wood in some of those pallets- Its just a **** shoot if you will find more similar ones. There is an business center near here and they have alot of sales businesses that rece3ive things on pallets and then repack and ship the stuff. They toss some really NICE pallets. I go by probably every 2 weeks and pick up the nicest ones before the crusher gets there.

Keep the pics coming guys- I think you are getting the idea of what I am thinking of.

  27. FWIW: Many pallets are treated with fungsides and other stuff to discourage rot, decay and consumption by hungry little creatures.

You don't want to be importing Black Brainrot from overseas. It might compete with our indigenous Brainrot species.

I would not want to have much contact with that wood.

Please tell me you do not plan to build it like any of those above. you can do it right and make the wood look worn. Woodies are unique rides and the world does not need a shriner version of a woodie...

The word pallet and woodies do not belong in the same sentence...

I understand the urge for what would look like a 60's surf rod.. by then the wood was worn, beat up etc... but the wood on the cars were factory (not necessarily bumpled up **** boxes)... I also want to do a ride in that look...

here is a worn wood woodie

  30. That is a Cantrell Bodied Dodge! Rare enough.

Besides, Worn-Out Woody was cowboy singer back in the 1930s.

...or else it's an old Country & Western bar in Bakersfield. I forget...
