I have a question on these old Chevy sixes. I have a friend with a 38 Chevy Sedan. It has the original 216 with a 3 speed ******. Will a 235 out of a 60 bolt up to his trans? Motor mounts? Etc? What has do be done to make it work? Thanks....
Trans - yes, use the original bellhousing motor Mounts - yes, change the plate that sits between the timing cover and the block of the 60, making the same mounting setup as the 38. Etc - shorten the water pump, either buy a shortened from Patricks, or do it yourselfor buy an adapter on EBay that allows you to use the original water-pump , change the wiring to 12 volts if you use the 12 volt starter and flywheel from the 60. 12 volt and 6 volt flywheels have a different number of teeth. Or you could use the original 6 to V8 engine mount adapters that were on the 60 engine, SBC engine mounts, and a readily available sbc to 38 mounting kit, and not worry about the front mounts as per the original set-up.
Actually, if the '38 still has its original engine, the flywheel won't work on the newer engine. '37-'40 flywheels had a four bolt pattern that doesn't line up with the '41-'62 six bolt pattern. A newer 6 volt flywheel will work if you're sticking with the original starter and bell housing, and will use a 9 inch clutch, unless you find a '54 flywheel, which uses a more common 10 inch setup--a sbc pressure plate will bolt up.
Really, do myourself a favor and go over to these sites. They tell you everything you need to know about which parts fromt what you must use and the interchangability of parts. That's what they specialize in.
