I was in my car driving home from work, and of all things the song "Return to Sender" had just played. Kind of weird actually.

I was trying to figure out the best way to tell my late wife that our first child had been still born. The fucking doctors would not or did not want to tell her. I am still pissed about that bit.

Every year on this day it hits me right where it hurts.

    The what if's.

But we did have another child later.

Being serious for a moment , there's a really good documentry on BBC Radio 2 just now called "Don't Start Me Talking About Elvis", all about what us Brits were doing when he passed . Click the link NOW to hear it live ...

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/

If you miss it , still hit the link , there's usually a "Listen Again" facility for this sort of stuff , just search for the programme title ;-)

I was 8 years old. My Dad had the garage door open and was working on his '33 Tudor. I heard it on the radio just as I was entering the garage.

I got my newspapers to do my paper route, opened the bundle, and read the headline "ELVIS DEAD". I was around 13 or so, didnt this "E" was that popular at the time. Guess I was wrong.

I was with my wife & kids on vacation in Michigan. Only went there twice -- one year it was Elvis, the other year it was the POPE. Gave that place up before they got somebody else.
Elvis played Toledo twice -- I caught him in 1956 as he was just starting to skyrocket. The second show, decades later, I missed due to a cousin-in-law's wedding. They're divorced, bad decision, I should have seen Elvis. Their mariage tanked after five years, but Elvis, given his many faults, WILL ALWAYS BE THE KING OF ROCK 'N' ROLL!!!

    Lots a yung'uns here.

Anyway, at a Wendys resturant, stopped there to grab a bite to eat while towing our stock car out to the local track for a night of racing. Never a real big Elvis fan, but it sticks in my mind for some reason.

My mom was at work, I was at the sitter's house with my little sister. We listened to Elvis records for about two days afterward. The lady that used to watch us was really upset about it. I was 9 years old, but liked his music. Still do.

  20. I was listening to the radio whilst giving my girlfriend a good seeing to... We were both big Elvis fans and we pretty much lost our rythm at that point.

I remember it like it was yesterday. I was the manager for a burger joint and I was cutting onions for the lunch shift. I went up front and told my employees that Elvis just died. To this very day they still swear that I was crying over the loss of the King. It was the onions I tell ya. When I was a kid, bedtime was 9 o'clock. But we could stay up until 10:00 if an Elvis movie was on. I miss the King.

Some of the younger members discount Elvis ... and some folks just did not like Elvis as a entertainer ... and all of the above is cool too ...
But anyone over 45 or so ... with the least amount of common sense ... has to recognize the effect of Elvis on the culture and styles of America and to a lesser degree ... the world. He was a SuperStar .. before that term was worn out by pretenders. I know of no singer/actor today that has or had the impact that Elvis had.

As for 30 years ago ...
My wife and I drove my 32 Hi-boy roadster to the Mall ... and heard about his death there. We were buying ourselves a anniversary present. We were married on August the 17th ( tomorrow :) ) a few years before.
