'28 RPU -- First time around the block

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Detonator, Aug 18, 2007.

  1. I've got a ton of respect for you guys that crank out cars in six months. This one's taken me nearly five years. In June I thought I had everyting buttoned up, but when I started cranking the engine to make oil pressure, she spewed a coupe of quarts of oil onto the shop floor. Turns out the machine shop that built the engine left five (count 'em, five!) freeze plugs out before bolting on the flywheel. Thanks to HAMBers telriv and titus I learned what needed to be done -- including an oil galley plug in FRONT of the dizzy drive gear that I never EVER woulda found.

This week I buttoned her up and fired 'er off, set the timing, synched the carbs, ran in the cam, and set up the clutch and shift linkage. I put about 20 miles on the clock today, and she steers straight, stops good and goes scary fast. Got to diddle some more with the shift linkage tomorrow, haven't yet found fourth gear. But then again haven't really needed it with all the tourist traffic we get in the summer.

    Here's some pix:

  7. a stunning automobile, with the right look and the right stance.

    Congrats.

  8. PERCIVERANCE -- Wasn't that the scary "squeal-like-a-pig" hillbilly movie?

Seriously, thanks for the nice words. The exhaust was built by a guy here in Santa Cruz named Gary Evans. His fab skills are unbelieveable, as are the cars he builds.

  13. Hey, thanks you guys. The HAMB has been pretty a big part of this build -- both informational and inspirational.

The master cylinder is International Truck. It's similar to the Chevy truck M/C's -- bolts right up to the Ansen swing pedals. But I had to sleeve the clutch side down from 1" to 3/4" to work with the clutch slave.

It is the perfect example of a model A Highboy RPU. Stance, attitude, drivetrain and color all work together. It's beautiful.

Glad you left the rear fender formers on the bed. A really great car, glad to hear it runs and drives as well as it looks, so many don't.
Is that 20MM Ack-ack shell you're using for a radiator overflow tank?
Congratulations, that's five years of your life's spare time very well spent!!

Who cares how long it takes to build a car when they turn out as perfect as this one. Very nice.
