How many of you have seen the 1963 movie "It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World" it has to be one of the first full movie chase seens.
So what is your favorite vehicle (car, truck, airplane: ETC) from the movie?
Mine would have to be that 1948 Ford Convertible that Phip Silvers drove.
Check out the cars in the background also and ya they roll a '61 Impala bubble top plus wreck other cool cars.
By the way I picked up a DVD copy at a dollar store.:D

I love that movie. Phil Silvers ride is my favorite too. Buddy Hackett just kills. He's hilarious. I also dig Jonathon Winter's tow truck.

    Hey,

Seen it? In was filmed in my home town, Long Beach California!
Also Santa Monica and Terminal Island,

The red '62 Dodge droptop does it for me. They must have bent a
few of them makin' the movie.

That's funny, I watched this yesterday afternoon too, and was also thinking that there sure were a bunch of great cars in there. I'm sure you were also noticing all the great stuff in the filling station that Jonathon Winters destroys, like that big Wynns display.

I also noticed the cool handlettering on the wrecker truck, very Roth-style. I wonder if it was painted by legendary titles designer Saul Bass, who designed the opening and closing credits for the movie.

I like the Jeep driven by Terry-Thomas, myself.

I'm not sure how many times I've watched it. Great movie. My favorite part is Sylvesters girlfriend (Barrie Chase) dancing. LOL

Love that outfit! There is all sorts of cool cars in the background.

One of my all time favorites. Saw it when it came out in 63, and many times since. As a budding 13 y.o. hotrodder, Phil Silvers 48 ragtop certainly caught my eye, and as a 13 y.o. horny adolescent, Dorothy Provine really caught my eye. :)

Like Rootie, I saw it at the theatre when it first came out. And I've seen it several times since, although I did not catch this recent showing. I always enjoy these old movies for the cars at least. When I first saw it at age 8 or 9, I guess that Jimmy Durante was probably the only character that I knew as an actor at that time. I was bummed that he died early on and took a '57 Ford with him! :D That was always one of my favorite 50s cars and still is.
As a side note, I think many of us who grew up in the 60s were also devotees of Mad magazine. If you ever get a chance to read their parody of this movie, it's great. They called it "It's a World, World, World, World Mad."

The Santa Monica Police Department wa actually just a S M P D sign change on the Long Beach Y M C A.
The scene with the ladder on the side of the building was filmed in LB too.
I saw it in a down town LB theatre when it first came out, the theatre was just a few blocks from both locations.

always one of my personal favorite movies. one of the 3 dvds that i actually own.

    favorite quotes would be:

"what do they think im extra special stupid or sumthin"...johnathan winters

"you call that an old fashioned?!, ill show you an old fashioned! boys you fly the plane"... jim bacchus

    "yea baby yea!!!"... dick shawn

" ya see, i didnt want the money for me i wanted it for the old widow lady whos been lookin after me since i was 14, maybe by her one of them electric wheelchairs or sumthin"... johnathan winters

" he just went sailin' on out there, i mean whoom, sailin"... milton berle

"dontcha see it? its the big W i tell ya!" ...johnathan winters

some interesting notes were that parnelli jones and aj foyt got jobs as stunt drivers for the movie. thats who youre seeing slinging the plymouth cabs around.

they said it took twice as long as the film should have took to make on account of everybody cutting up so much between scenes. truly a great film.

I like the 61 chevy. At the end, when they're tearing thru town, you see the same 57 ford wagon and a blue 60 impala 'vert over and over again. An absolutely great movie

I certainly didn't know about A.J. and P.J. working the film, good stuff. And I can certainly believe that all involved had a blast.

I know some people will say there is no comparison, but I liked Rat Race which was apparently inspired by it.

  23. I've probably seen that movie 20 times now... every year or so when TCM runs it in widescreen I usually end up sitting through it again. "this is a car, not a canoe!!" ...

At the end you see the same half-dozen or so cars a couple times - I think the studio may have owned them and used them so if someone wrecked filiming a scene, they'd hit a studio car. But that's just a guess - it's intersting that that silver 54-55 'vette shows a couple times, along with a '56 Ford ragtop and a couple others.

The ambulance at the airport was a nice piece. It was a '60 Buick, tough to find any of those anyymore. But not only is that movie funny, when it was made almost all cars were still cool, so it's fun to watch and see what pops up in the background.

I agree -- it's one of my favorite movies, and the plane flying through the billboard is one of the BEST and (more importantly) best PLANNED movie stunts in the era before computer graphics.

But the scene that just kills me every time I watch it is the one with the boys waking up on the pool tables when the guy sweeps open the drapes and the sun comes blinding through their hangovers.

I saw it when it first came out. Been cracking up ever since. My favorite car was the Vette in Long Beach. Matter of fact, I work and my brother lives near the "Big W".

As for the girls, had a crush on Edie Adams ever since.

Every comic was, except for Don Rickles......I believe it was a sore point with him.

  28. Without seeing the movie for the 100th or so time, I think the '61 hardtop is a Bel Air, not an Impala, but I could be wrong.

I like the two '58? '59? Plymouth taxis, driven by Rochester and Columbo. Watching those things loaded with crazed treasure hunters slewing around curves was a high point for me.
