I need to start getting all the big parts together for the 3 Window build and am a firm believer of only doing things once, unless of course if I have done them and sometimes they need to be redone. :)

Anyway I have sourced a hemi and possibly a blower set up as well. I'll get a gearbox down here in Aus so I need to start thinking about the rear end. I am leaning towrds a quick change as most miles will be on the street, with long distance cruising, some strip 10-15 times a year and then the salt once a year. The ability to change ratios to do all 3 is very appealing.

Now I am wondering what other quickchnage you guys are using and who you would recomend to put one together. Whilst I have no expectation the the blown hemi will get anywhere near 750hp, I'd like to build everything to that incase I step up to a blown BBC chev later on.

Cyclone Kev for a trad approach.

Was discussing diffs and dif products witha supplier/builder the other day. It's frightening what is cast in China these days, not that the brands are letting on. Including Winters stuff.

  6. Hi: There are some obvious things to consider in buying a Q.C. -- with quite a few opinions and products to go around. Each design has it's Pros/Cons . . . so do your research and understand there is more than just "style" and money involved.

If you are running a high horsepower setup (like a blown Hemi), then you need to consider how you're going to drive it, what happens if you break it, etc.. The more traditional styled "V8" quick changes (the ones that use Ford V8 ring and pinions) - are not going to be as strong as a big 10" quick change --> like a big Winters or Frankland.

Example: Winters claims their V8 Q.C. can handle up to 550 HP, their 10" about 800 HP and their heavy duty 10" about 1000 HP. Personally, I would not want to put 550 HP against a V8 Q.C. (any manufacturer) -- if I wanted to go to the drags, drop the clutch, burn off the tires, etc.. The cost of blowing up a Q.C. is something to consider. Also, keep in mind that running a Q.C. at Bonneville (easy starts) is a LOT different than running one at the drags or from your local stop light. (rolling start versus standing start --- salt versus sticky asphalt) -- the abuse situation is not the same.

If you're not going to abuse the car, not put big sticky tires on it and not try to hook it up and hard launch it (like a frequent big drop of the clutch from a standing start), then you may be able to get away with the smaller and less stout V8 style.

There are other advantages to running the big Q.C.s --> multiple differential options, lockers, black-gold, Winters Track, etc.. Do you want a "peg-leg" rear or a posi . . . another consideration.

I love the look of the original "Halibrand V8" style Q.C.s with early Ford axle housings ( I have a new one ready for a flathead project), but I decided I had better go the 10" route to handle my blown Hemi, manual trans, my "right foot", etc.. on my current project.

If you're not familiar with Q.C's and which models to use for what -- talk to Frankland Racing, Winters, Cyclone, Spadaro, etc -- and make sure you talk about your specific application, horsepower goals, driving style, etc . . . then you'll make the right product choice.

What Bored&Stroked said is pretty much correct.

I have put a 10" Halibrand in mine because I didn't want to put in an "Overdrive" transmission, for reliability (behind my blown flatty that may put out 300hp it's an overkill) and because someday I may want something with a little more power. I went with "Dutchman" axles and a DPI Black Gold Torenson locker. I would not be affraid to put 600HP and a set of wrinkle walls to this rearend, but over 700HP I would worried about picking up the pieces.

I just came back from a small but nice car show and talked to a number of the people there with high HP cars. One, a 41 Willys had a very healthy 671 blown 454 Chevy...........that dyno'd at the crank on pump gas @900HP. He didn't feel the quick change could stand up to the torque so he went with a "special Mark Williams" 9" Ford with very heavily braced axle tubes and 12 spline axles.

Both of the small 9" ring QC are nice looking but will not stand up to that kind of HP or very much abuse. I would give Keith at Dutchman/and or Winters a call and tell them what you want out of the rearend and listen to what they have to say.

Oh, when I was talking to the guy with the blown 41 Willys, I looked in the trunk and under the very nice leather panel he had a 15 gallon gas tank. I asked him how many miles that big blower motor could squeeze out with 15gals...................................he told me about 45!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just had to laugh out load, he did too!

I've watched winters equipped modifieds do thousands of big block powered WOT laps around dirt tracks, smoking the tires and picking up the front tire.

When it came time to buy a quickchange that would take what my 392/4-speed will dish out, the choice was obvious.

Speedway sells a nice but pricey ***embly with 9" non-floater ends, drum brakes, and a ratcheting locker carrier. Absolutely the ***iest piece of metal I've ever purchased. Add up the nickels and dimes of putting one together yourself, and it starts making sense.

Thanks guys, have PM'd Kevin and heard back from him (Great service) and stayed up until 1 am to talk with the guys at Dutchman who use Winters setups with their own axles and tubes. I am leaning that way only because they have an Aussie dealer - on the rare chance that warranty would be an issue and I can get the whole set up for a similar price as a centre from Kevin. Thanks guys.

Just have to stick my nose in this one too..

Bored and Stroked pretty much covered everything in one shot. All I can do is add a pic of my Frankland big quickie behind my blown Pontiac powered Model A.

Good luck and holler if you need anything.

PS. I drive mine everyday and she gets better than 18 mpg on the highway.

Shifty Shifterton mentioned the speedway guys. That a good thought. Maybe you could talk to some of them here too. I know whenever I've been to sprintcar and midget guys shops they've got QC stuff everywhere.

I run a Frankland QC in my Bantam Altered, now its not putting out huge horsepower but it has seen the dragstrip for the last 6 years with out a problem. The nice thing I found was the ease of changing gear ratios to get the best one for my combination. A friend of mine uses one in his SCCA GT1 car and that has 600 H.P. and has never had a single problem.
