So if you had a kid that was 14 and buying him his first real board, what would you suggest Cab? My kid has an old thrashed out board with cheapy wheels etc. I was thinking of getting him something a little more respectable for Christmas.

    Roothawg,
Get him what ever he wants or desires in a deck, that will make him stoked:)

when parents try to buy their kids what they think they might want, they end up getting their kid the wrong deck:(

ask him questions about what or who he's into, then you'll get some knowledge about your sons p***ion and stoked him out as well because you'll show him that you care about what he's into, it's very important in a kids life:)

    hope this helps, best wishes.

Amen Cab!!! when i worked at the surf shop in Visalia...parents would come in all the time and buy a complete setup...I would tell them "see you in a few days" ...

Roothawg the best thing you could do is take him to the shop and slap down the card and let him build it there...The guy behind the counter will hook him up with everything he wants...and it will be right...Then you dont have to heat the "Yeah but Cab is my Favorite skater ...not this ****!" "And those trucks ****!" :D

He's really just a wannabe skater. I just want him to have a decent setup.

He does do a few tricks but here in OK, we don't have a lot of skate parks etc. He just learns via hard knocks. He's trying, I'll give him that. He carries his board everywhere.........

Thanks for the advice. I'll see what he wants.

    DOESN'T MATTER! :)

95% of us here are wannabe hot rodders, but we try real hard. ;)

If your son carries his board around with him, he's a skateboarder. That's what he identifies with. Doesn't matter if he's any good or not.

I, myself, wouldn't be able to skate away if Godzilla attacked tomorrow. I'd be toast.

Nice board, Cab. I always dig your at***ude.

^^^ i agree, if he's carrying it around all the time, he's purty much a skater... just needs to put it down and roll on it instead of carrying it!

I don't have a local shop to know what prices are at shops, but there's some really slick websites for building completes : skatewarehouse.com or blackholeboards.com both have a purty good selection. but if you do some homework, you can get middle of the road completes for good prices on ebay as long as you don't have to have specific colors of trucks and wheels....

I'll add a question to this thread... I've got two boys, ages 7 and 8 that are getting into skating... so I'm going to build a halfpipe next spring at the latest... I know I could be happy with anything between 4 and 6 feet tall, but what do you guys think they'd be best on? I don't want it so big they can't learn and have fun, but i don't want it too small that they get bored either... and is 12' wide a good choice? 8 always seemed kinda narrow to me, but it's been a while since i've been on a ramp....

Got mine. It's soooo much cooler than my Spongebob deck.
    Thanks, Cab.

Take the kid to a shop and let him and an educated shop guy put together a set up for him. I did that with my son for his 7th birthday. I would have ordered him a deck I liked, Indy trucks and the like. He got hooked up with an Element Twig ( lighter and smaller ) deck and a set of light weight Grind King trucks. His ollies doubled just because the board and trucks were lighter and the right size for him.

You would be surprised how much more he will get into skating after he gets to put together his first own set up.

Oh - And the Cab deck is awesome!!!!!
