I have a 1950 buick super and the hood flips up from both sides however every time I go to close the hood I scratch up my paint. Although my latches on both sides work properly this problem still occurs. Please keep in mind there are no hinges. Therefore do any of you old hot roders out there have any idea what type of hinge system and where to get it I could install to make this hood go in any direction and stop beating my fenders to death. I could not figure out how to post pics to this site but if you need them please pm me and i am sure I can send them that way. Upfront thanks
There are also adjustments you can make to the hood/fenders to allign it better. Get yourself a Buick shop manual. It explains this and a lot more. Books4Cars.com
sounds like an aliment problem too me either the fenders /hood/or hinges are outta whack cause there should be no interferance when you open or close either side.
Get yourself a Buick shop manual. It explains this and a lot more. what he said. A good one will run ya about 50 bucks, well worth it!!
Does anyone know if he could use hinges from say a '50 Caddy or Olds? You know re-hang the hood on Caddy parts or something like that! Just a thought.
If the rubber bumpers are worn out or the hinge/latch pivots are warn that can cause the problems you are having. As said get the shop manual and follow the adjustment procedure after all the warn/missing parts have been fixed. Thaos hoods worked fine when new and good as used cares in the 50's and 60's no reason why yours should not be fixable. Brian
I had the same problem. my Buick was bone stock - never hit - never dis***embled, so I can only ***ume that it wasn't too terribly out of alignment. I never got it to a point of full on restoration (taking off fenderes and whatnot) - I just stripped the exterior paint and did the DP90 bit. I could never get my hood to align right or shut properly on the ...ummm if I remember correctly...p***enger side. I tinkered and tinkered and never did get to a satisfactory resolution. I was goint to just put a conventional hood hinge on it and fabricate a popper, but I never got that far. Maybe I should have bought a manual....
