Ok so i got an edsel..........and i know theres' a decent following for them now n you get the odd cool custom job.........but were there any decent edsel customs done 'back in the day'??
I've got a car craft somewhere with styling ideas for the 58models.....and i've seen the grille centre section used 2 together horizontally in other custom's grilles n stuff..........but dont recall seeing an edsel done then (from the limited mags etc i've got)anyone help me out here,or were they just regarded as too ugly back then?!!

I have a great picture of a customized '59 that I saw in a junkyard, but I haven't figured out how I can get pictures off of my phone onto my computer.

Basically they had replaced the front bumper and built a custom grille eliminating the horsecollar. I think it had all it's emblems shaved too.

If I can ever get the pics off my camera, I'll post it.

If anyone else has custom Edsel pics from years past, I'd love to see them too.

I would also be interested in seing some.. as I have always liked the looks of these ugly mugs (gasp!) and wondered what they would look like.

not to mention they are cheap :)

Sounds cool man,tho i'd like to think a decent custom couldve been done w/out removing the horsecollar, surely that really robs the iden***y of the car (tho guess that was the idea:D:rolleyes: ).....

No old stuff out there then?Guess they really were the ugly duckling way back then!In which case i'm kinda surprised one of the big custom guys never took one on,to 'turn it beautiful' as it were.

  7. lot of customs with Edsel parts. wagon Tail lights on T-birds and fords. Edsel front clips on ranchero's. but don't remember any Edsel's cruising low and slow. seen a few that ran hard on the street and strip.
There were lot's of 50's cars that were considered to ugly to build. that look pretty good now. going back even further. no one in their right mind would own that Ugly Ford built in 37. 38's weren't much better.
58 Impala made me vomit first time I saw one. times have changed. I'd give anything for a 58 Buick Limited Convertible that I turned down a ride in when Hitch Hiking as a youth (would have been embarr***ed if some I knew saw me riding in that ugly boat haha!)

My buddy max has a cool '58 2 door hardtop. Its white with an orange metal flake top. He made it into a covertible first, but then changed his mind and they put a '57 for top. it looks really cool. he's also got the cruiser skirts on it/ I will post a pic as soon as photobucket starts working again.

Weren't edsels like nerd cars back in the 50's?

I have an old kustom magazine where they have a modded Ranger. It looks like the general idea was to get rid of anything that id'ed it as an Edsel.

Edsel wagons are the best looking wagons right after 59/60 Chevys, imo.

I saw a shot of that ride at the moon show. I'd love to get better look at what's been done to it if you can find some more.

I got a 2 door. not really a custom, but it's got custom gauges!

  26. Do you see that big "P" on the center of the steering column? I was driving my bosse's brand new Citation in 1961, and pulling into the parking space ( I don't know what came over me) but I had a helmet fire and decided to stop by pushing the P ****on. The car wasn't going fast, but thank C$#@% that it just locked up rather than snapping the parking pawls in the transmission. Nobody saw it, but I was still so embarr***ed that I could do such a stupid thing, when I knew better. Since then, I have gone on to do stupider things, but hey, I'm a survivor if nothing else.

Here is a nice mild custom Edsel from the late 50's or early 60's... from the Barris book.
