Pomona Swap Meet sucked today?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Groucho, Aug 26, 2007.

  1. Anyone go today? It sure seemed like a really bad one. ****boxes galore on trailers, dollies, and flatbeds. Seems not too much is able to make it under it's own power. I saw a half a beat 69 Chevy on a flatbed. No ch***is, no front clip, nothing. And it was beat. It had to cost more in gas to get it there than it was worth. There used to be a lot of cool stuff to look at like a car show of sorts. Now it looks like a self serve wrecking yard. I have doubts it'll survive the next 5-10 years with the low quality and lots of out of town buyers doing their shopping on-line now. So, who went, and what's your take?

It hasn't been worth my time to get up that early in a while. There's rarely any good old parts to rummage through, mostly just venders selling cheap new ****.
The Long Beach swap meet is ususally much better if you're a scavenger like myself. :)

I did pretty good today! I parked outside on the street near the college for free. Went to the back gate and asked a guy in an impala if I could ride in with him. He was a seller so he already had a p*** to go in, but I gave hime a few bucks anyway. So i saved the $7 on parking.
I found a complete set of 40 ford brakes for $75. I only needed the dust caps, which he sold me for .56 cents. (the change i had in my pocket). shoulda bought the set now that I think about it!
i found a chome oil filler neck with chrome breather cap that i needed. The guy just gave me that for free.
i got a repro 40 ford steering wheel for 200. and some other misc. stuff i needed like that silver insulation stuff.\
I also found a t-bucket top, which now that i think about it I shoulda bought it to modify it for my model t. hopefully its there next time.
there was some alright cars too, but the weather was kinda wierd.

i wanted to go but other things came up. but honestly i have had no luck finding things at the swap. too many vendors selling knick knacks, microwaves and stoves and stuff? its turning into a true SWAP MEET rather than a CAR SWAP MEET! its overfilled with pure ****! and the worst part is it only keeps getting worse! Long Beach has taken a turn for the best. they rearranged everything about a year ago and my feelings for it changed, it used to be ok, but now its MUCH BETTER! my pick is honestly Long Beach for car swaps.

when is the Long Beach show held ?? Where is it ? Is it as big as Pomona. I never usually find anything but it is still the biggest meet out here. I live in the Phoenix area so it is WAY better than anything around here.

I was thinking about having my shop closed Sunday and Monday- but since I'm only about 5 miles from Veteran's Stadium maybe I should be open on the Sunday that is the same as Vets so people who didn't find anything have one more shot at taking something home? Sound good?
I am planning on having a large inventory of used stuff gathered from friends that will change on a weekly basis so the bargain hunters have something to look at other than the new stuff. I call it INDOOR SWAP MEET.

If anyone wants to drop off pieces for consignment I will be offering that service. Gets you much more exposure than they're getting hiding in a corner of your garage- and gets you some cash!

Pomona is where to go to put your car for sale for 3 times what its worth. Its where you go to buy NEW parts for your car from the vendor cause your too lazy to order it and have it shipped, its where you go to look at cool Volkswagons, its where you go to buy $9 Cheeseburgers, its where you go to look at $80,000 street rods, its where you waste your money and your morning looking at ****py cars everyones selling so they can build a Ratrod.
    Just my 2cents. haha.

Pamona has ****ed for a while. I used to have a spot right on the main drag as you walk north. Gave it up last year. I think ebay and The Samba for you vw guys had killed the swapmeet. They had to put the over flow in the vw section just to make it look like there was people selling... Duecevw

Hey Jim A, I used to find all kinds of good stuff on the used, consignment tables at Blair's in Pasadena. I hope that's your idea. Cool and nostalgia correct.

Funny- the name I was planning on using before hooking up with SO-CAL was "Underground Hot Rods".

Why does that sound like Rat Rods for the Subway? Or really hopped up tunneling equipment? Be as cute as you like, but keep the mark up on the used stuff reasonable, please.

Hotrod Underground implies covert activity. Underground Hotrod, sounds like a Time capsule dirt find...

    Groucho,

 I never go to Pomona any more, drive 200 miles to look at Mustang, Camaro parts roll after roll forget it. You can find some good parts there it just takes to long too walk through the junk. Turlock swap meet is better.

Pomona has ****ed for years!!!! I quit going 7 years ago, ever since George Cross & Sons charge a fortune for a seller space, nobody wants to cut a deal. Pomona has become nothing but HIGH HIGH prices and a bunch of non-auto related JUNK!! My buddy went in on Saturday (we are 2 blocks from the fairgrounds) and came back with the same story ...nothing but junk and high prices!! AND then if you are brave enough to fight through the riff-raff and crowds and people throwing bottles on Sunday- then you are really crazy! Long Beach and the other smaller swaps are way better for so many reasons...... but then again, I've been going to Turlock, Hershey, San Diego, etc for years..... nothing can compare to those swaps.......
    my .02 cents

  27. i didn't go this time but i always come home with something cheap (lately 2 jets for under $10). i went to LB and SD last year i wasn't too impressed, might give them another try. i've already faced the truth that pomona has been going down hill, but i can find something cheap just by the size of the thing. i REALLY want to go to turlock next year (i hear the one if feb? is better). so turlock, big 3, fathers day roadster swap and if i'm lucky maybe hershey for the first time also.

Pomona was good 15 years ago it was where you got rid of your car if it didn't sell in the recycler, now it's where you try to rump up an over inflated mark up!!........... Long beach was always good when it was just that section behind the stadium but it,s still pretty good haven,t been for a while though.. Jim A great idea for an open house get the coffee on , could call it "parts at the beach"
