Ive seen the 50's cars made into customs, but has anyone seen the 30's hillmans turned into a rod? I have a chance to get one and wanted to see some examples if possible. btw its a four door.
Ok, Ill try this. Has anyone every seen a hillman? Would it look cool to chop it up a little? Or Would I be wasting my time? Someone should be able to give me an opinion...
i have absolutely no idea what an early 30's Hillman looks like. looks like no one else does either... do you have any pictures?
the only one i can think of is a 35, it was chopped, channeled, sectioned, shortened (with a stretched hood!) and turned in to a 2 door.. It was done in the late 70s in the UK and called "Moulin Rouge" and really was a show stopper. Its a car I want even now. if you go to www.nsra.org.uk the guy who now has it is called the candy man on the site, he should have pics..
here's the pic page from the Australian Hillman club. Most are later, but there's a few pre-war (WW2) sedans on the page. Most 30's English cars look pretty much like scaled down 30's US cars. http://www.hillman.org.au/hillman_page_8.htm Cheers, Glen.
My girlfriends dad has a hillman but I think its a 60 something. He Put a big block chevy and drag races it. Low 10's.
Hi guy's, here's a pic of a 1960 Commer Cob (van)witch has the same body style as a 1960 Hillman Husky (wagon).I have 1 of these Commers as my new project.
Hillman Husky floor pans can be found under Sunbeam Tigers too,as seen on Maxwell Smart. An early thirties hillman? ,Big or small ? I had a mate in new Zealand with a 1934 Hillman and it was big ****er with a sidevalve 6. Hillman 10's were little cars about 1/2 the size of a model A.
I thought this was going to be a gag post.... "What's a hill man??" "I'm not sure, but you'll probably get the **** over it" I was waiting for something like that to happen...
In the link Glen posted, It looks like the blue car under the engine pic. About half page. The guy has just the body no fenders or grill, but I think it would make a good purple people eater type rod after I cut it up.
I had a 1950's Husky in the early 70's. Fitted a works factory Hillman Hunter GT engine (150hp) and close ratio 4 speed gearbox into it and it went like the clappers, damn thing only weight about 1400lbs all up. I've seen Aussie rods made out of English Vauxhalls, Morris, Austins, Standards, and of course Ford Anglia's (pops) and Prefects, and they all make good little lightweight hot rods. English car design was a fair bit behind US styles after WW2, so many English cars of the 50's still had the cl***ic pre-48 style of bodywork. For example, Ford UK built an English 'Pilot' sedan in the early 50's pressed with the body molds of the 36-37 US Ford that were sent to Ford UK after the war to help them get started again. There are a few Ford Pilots in Australia that have had the 36-7 US front clip added to the English 1950's body to build a hybrid model. Apparently the clip swap is pretty straightforward. The Pilot front clip was 'modernised for 1950's production, and looked more like the Ford Prefect style. Cheers, Glen.
Looks like it might be the bigger one. Either way, go for it. Would make a good fenderless rod, even if you left it a moredoor. If it happens to be the smaller version though, those were down-sized already, as compared to U.S. stuff, so you might just want to mildly chop it. Roger
