In the recent (Sept) issue of Hot Rod they have an article on the Rice Bowl III race car of M&V Automotive. I've had a soft spot for this car for years so I, of course, HAD to buy the issue just for the pictures and story. In the article it says the car was featured in a magazine called Cars in June of 1965. Anyone know where I can obtain a copy of this magazine?
I love that car too! Here's a link to the picture Pat mentions in the article... the one that they couldn't get permission to print... when the car had the Hemi in it. http://www.mysterion.net/AAFA/socal020.shtml Sam.
Great link! The mid 60's drag racing was the ****! The blue Bantam being pushed by the blue "T"? That's it, right there
That is a great article in Hot Rod. I never knew Gray's roadster was an old drag car. Sooo cool!! Malcolm
The drag car was not the same as the red roadster. He ran the drag car beforehand - please note that it is a roadster pickup. Original color was yellow, I beleive.
No, it's actually pretty well do***ented... and with pictures, no less... that the roadster Gray owned, the red one... was once raced under the M&V banner. Sam.
Yes. One was a yellow '26 T RPU with an injected SBC named Rice Bowl III. A replica of it was built by the big names in the business (Pete & Jake, Little John ****era, etc.) and given to Gray Baskerville at the Fremont Nostalgia Drags in '86. The other was a red Deuce roadster that later became GB's daily driver. You can recognize it by the vertical push-bars on the rear spreader bar. After he died, it was sold to Jim Shelton who hasn't changed a thing, including the primered rear fender.
Yup, the Hot Rod article says they sold the Rice Bowl III and then built the Bantam. It first ran the original 288 SBC that was in the Rice Bowl. A teacher in SoCal now has the original Bantam body in his cl*** room at Huntington Middle school! Good article worth a read. Pat Ganahl did a lot of homework pulling this article together with pic of the Bantam body, a current pic of the roadster pickup in a garage in Oregon, and of course a bunch of pics from Baskerville.
Anyone have any idea what month the article was in in '86 ('87?) of the replica they gave GB in Hot Rod? I wish I had a copy of Sept. issue I haven't gotten Hot Rod in while. Anyone have an extra?
I have the '86 issue of HR. I won't part with it, but I may be persueded to photocopy it and mail it to you.
Well I think I have it I just wanted to know what month it was to narrow he search. I'm looking for a Sept. issue to.
I have the issue with the Rice Bowl article - nice two page color feature in the May '88 issue of HRM. I've held onto the issue for all these years and still dream of building a similar car (though the awesome BFD beat me to it).
just flat blew me away when I found out the original car is owned by a friend of mine here in Portland, I missed the artical in Hot Rod. He said that Hot Rod Mag Guys spent an entire day at his place Photographing the car and only put one Photo in the magazine. he found the car some time ago and had to sell his 40 Willy's to buy it. I can guarantee you he's no Bruce Meyers. just a working stiff. he has alway loved that car and is collecting the parts to bring it back to it's glory days I'll get some decent photo's
It warms my heart that he is working toward a full restoration and it's even sweeter that he's a workign cl*** guy.
Sam, I know this post is nearly 9yrs. old, but i'd like to see a pic of the original RR I as it looked with the HEMI. When Ernie moved across the street The RR I was long gone, but the Bantam moved into his Ramona St house garage in 1969, This is where I remember seeing the Rolling Rice Bowl monicker in the shell of the Bantam's insert It had a II on it. Pat's article indicated that the T version had a III on it, but Ernie himself indicated that it was just a an image. When they built the Altered, then came the II, then when the guys got together and built the III it was from parts that Gray himself was gathering and guys like Chuck Lombardo, Pete & Jake and original RR#I parts that Ernie was hoarding for years. I can say that I saw these parts with my own eyes from my driveway directly across the street from Ernie's house as there was a Set of Halibrands on slicks as well as a small block and a A tailgate with I believe 1964 NHRA Record Holder-Champion on it as well. The Bantam was sold in 1974 or so???? I'd like to know if the teacher at Huntington Middle School still has the Bantam body that was painted by Nori Morita at Mura's Auto Body formerly across the street the San Gabriel Civic Auditorium painted and covered by HRM in 1964. In 1991 Ernie gave me b&w proofs that Gray shot back in the 60's, I think the pix are @ my house in San Gabriel, I haven't seen them in years.... Ernie and his son Dennis pulled this out of a file cabinet in his garage after he closed the M-V Pasadena shop. In the cabinet also was a film shoot of Ernie's Y-Block powered 40 Deluxe coupe. That was one *****in car!!!!! I'm glad that Bob Vacca has the RR III, as it was Gray's last love along with Susan-his wife, his daughter and Paul's M-V Automotive 32 nose bleed Ford roadster. It's funny as I'm in the Trompers CC with Bob V. and in the Outriders with Jim Shelton so I get to experience both of the M-V T-Roadster and The Driven 32. I only wish that I could see the Bantam again. .
I remember Pat sending me some black and whites... not sure where they are. I can see them in my head... they were the build pictures of the car. Pat located the original ch***is up north... I had pics of it too. The guy thought it was worth big $$$$ Here it is with a hemi in it... Sam
Sam, Happy New Year!!!! That's a great shot=Must be Pomona in the background???? Thank you for posting it. I've never seen this shot. This I'd ***ume would be about 1964-65. after Paul, Ernie & Gray did the Bantam. Look's about the same era as the Bikini Beach Movie shot @ the same locale. Thx again for digging it out-How's your T-Ster doing? I seem to remember you taking it out of retirement a year or so=Great to see it out again. Your's is another great version of the M-V Automotive style. CK.
