Between the fun runs and the cl*** stuff at the Hamb drags several of us were standing around bench racing. One of the things that came up was the 28 spline axles I'm running. The question came up "were they painted with a line". I never figured I'd go as fast as I did so no. OK, so after talking it over it sounds like a good idea to step up to some 31 spline axles. I've got the right length 31 spline axles from 71 Ford pickup 9 3/8" rear. A friend even has a traction loc for it. Problem is there are no gears made for that and 3.50 ones I have are as low as the stock ones went. That rules out the 9 3/8 center. I thought about changing side gears and the posi plate from 28 to 31 in the existing traction loc I'm running but I'm not positive I have the big bearing unit that will support the axle diameter. That brings me to where I'm looking for a 31 spline traction loc or other posi for my 9 inch. Anybody have a 31 spline 9" Ford Traction Loc laying around gathering dust? I don't need the whole third member, just the differential. If there are other options I'm more than open to them. I'm pretty darned cheap though, so no high $$$ stuff. ;-)
Man if you lived close I,d swap you! I have a 3:50 31 spline Trac-loc I,m converting to 28 to fit in my small bearing housing.Shipping something that heavy is out of the question.
Why not just get some aftermarket 28 spline axles? I would think your stock axles are gonna be fine in your car unless you plan to go faster in the future. Maybe pull an axle and look at it. Does it look like the splines are twisting? If it were me & I was not going to increase the HP & torque of my car I think I would just buy a backup set of stock axles to have just in case... If you are really worried about it get a set of aftermarket 28 spline axles.
That's tempting Ratmotor but yeah, the distance would be an issue. Also I was thinking of saving the 28 for my sons pickup.
Well, I do sort of plan on going faster and I intend on racing it with slicks plenty more. I was hoping somebody would have a 31 traction loc laying around they didn't need.
I think you can get aftermarket 28 spline axles for around $250-$300.. These are going to be stronger than stock 31 spline axles. If you change your diff you not only have to find & buy a new diff(around $200-$400 for a used big bearing unit in this area)but also new axles and if you plan to go faster in the future you are going to need aftermarket axles anyway no matter if they are 28 or 31 spline. I think you would be ahead of the game with just buying aftermarket 28 spline axles. Just my .02 cents. Good luck with it.
If you have a small-bearing housing, Moser will sell you 31 spline axles machined for a standard small-bearing.
I shouldn't have to buy axles if I find a 31 spline posi of some sort. The ones in the 9 3/8" I have are 31 spline and the right length for the housing under the car. Did I mention I was cheap? I'm watching a couple of ebay auctions. Let's see what happens.
I hope your stock 31s hold up better then mine did. Mind you I run a HP L6 and i sheered off a 1 1/2 off one and twisteded the **** out of the other. And that REALLY messed up The Posi that was in the 9in. Now I'm running 33 splined axles with a spool. So my 2cent input is Go with a better aftermarket set.
Well, I've been beating the **** out of my 28's and they're still there (knock on wood). I do think I'm pushing it with them and the slicks.
I just found this calculator which is kind of interesting. http://www.moserengineering.com/Pages/axletech.html
