I passed by a local car wash and found that they had a larg number of white plastic 55 gallon drums next to their dumpster. Immediately thinking of the "55 Gallon sandblasting cabinet" tech that was posted I stopped in and asked about them. They originally held soap fo rthe car wash and I was told I could take as many as I wanted. Now aside from the sandblaster cabinet, I was going to make a small parts washing bucket from one and use another as a big trash can. Does anyone else have some cool uses for them? I'ld like to hear them. Hell if nothing else, I can cut up a bunch and save the plastic to make small bushings and washers and such. So lets here em- cool to crazy!
i was totally wondering about this last week! there's a big stack of them nearby. i'm magnetically drawn to junk.
the top or bottom 4 inches or so would make a lot better oil drain pan than you can buy at your local auto parts store too !! (Top , providing you get the bungs with it )
I've been saving a 3/4 horse dc motor and gearbox to make a car part size "rock tumbler" for derust, smoothing etc. I'm sure plastic would be much quieter than a steel drum.
recycle drums for used oil and antifreeze, cut em down for large drain pans. Ive seen a local guy at car shows that has taken a bunch of them and made little train cars he hooks together and gives rides to the kids at car shows. Single axle under the back end of each barrel. Pulls them with his garden tractor.
me too- or its drawn to me...one or the other. GREAT IDEA. A while back I wanted to build one from a 5 gallon bucket to clean really cruddy radio cases.... I was thinking too small Thats freakin sweet! My kids would love that! Great ideas everyone. Keep em coming!
Use them to clean cast iron pots and pans (soak in acid). You might also check with the guys who rent porta-potties, as the primer for the potties comes in plastic barrels. They smell pretty strong, but it's a fresh smell
Sell em to Boyd and tell him there real Hot Rod material, betcha he busy them and cuts em up on that shitty show. He has the Alumatub how about a Plasticatub?
How long of a drive is it to Niagra Falls? If you're near the ocean, you could use them to hunt sharks like in Jaws. Electrolasis derusting tank would be great. The tumbler would also be good...I've seen where people took an old clothes drier and converted it. You could take the guts from a clothes drier and swap in the plastic tub. One bad thing about using it as a garbage can is that by the time you get the can full, you can't lift the plastic bag out of it anymore. Especially if you start throwing in absorb-all and metal scraps. -Brad
I store my beer in them, make sure there is still some soap left so you can have foam on your beer I used them to hold my body off the floor when I had the frame off thing going.
Not car related but dad sold his boat lift last year and we just tied four plastics barrel under it and pulled the floated lift behind the boat to the other side of the lake. Sure made it easier than taking it apart and carrying it up the hill. I also keep my extra floor dry bags in one. It keeps the cat from using it for the wrong reason.
I have about 40-50 of them out back of the shop.I guy comes by and get a few for his biodiesel, and his friend gets some for his fish pond filters that he makes. There is a few guys that use them for trash cans,we use some for trash cans here at the shop,we also cut them down and use them for spill containment around smaller 20gal. drums of acid.I've had some ppl use them for firewood/kindling holders.O ya and I used two of them to make dog houses for the dogs.
