Anyone know how to decode a vin for what i thought was a 46 dodge business coupe? I was told it was a 46, NY state says it isnt but wont tell me what it is? I gave the lady at DMV the paper with the serial scratched on it with lead pencil and she told me it wasnt a 46 and couldnt tell me what year it was because i didnt have a ***le to say that i was the correct owner. NY DMV ****s! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Bill Joyal
Pictures of the car? Vin number? Yes NY DMV ****s I have tried to deal with them before on another cars ***le a few years back and they sat on my check for 6 years before my buddy (a NY state senator) gave them a ring. I got my check back and a letter stating they could not find anything (they probably never looked?
Thanks Swifster for the link. It is indeed a 46 deluxe business coupe. Where I live, one side of the bridge is one county and the other side of the bridge is another. Both DMV's are about 30 minutes away from me in opposite directions. My insurance agent is right next to the Clinton County DMV so i went there and got the run around. I printed the paper out off of that site and went to Es*** County where they gave me no problems. Filled out one for to register and ***le for the first time, no bill of sale with me or a ***le. Lady asked me how I got the car, i told her it was on the property when my parents built the house and we decided to put it together and she asked me what it was worth i said no clue so she put down $100 and I had to pay $7.75 sales tax and $143 later i had my registration. Funny how one DMV told me it wasnt a 46 and blah blah blah but funny the other one didnt ask me anything about the car other than how i obtained it.
You will not get a "***le" for a car in NEW YORK built before 1974 (maybe a year ot two off) but you should get a registration reciept, the other end of the windshield reg sticker. This will be your ownership and transfer do***ent if it says "TRANSFERABLE" on it. Did you register it with a HISTORIC plate or regular registration? If you registered it as a HISTORIC vehicle you get a break on annual fee but you gotta renew yearly instead of every two years. But it you register HIST you can then get a break on insurance by picking up a policy from Grundy Heagerty American Hobbiest or whatever. Cost me 90 bucks a year for agreed value policy on my 46 Plymouth. BIG HINT!!!! Your Dodge is equiped with a fluid drive transmission. Make sure you have a good parking break or chock the wheels when you park on a grade, as the fluid drive torque transfer system DOES NOT provid compression braking with the engine off. The site you were linked to has a lot of infor on that series Dodge. If you decide to keep it stock for a while, the forumof that site will be a lot of help. Good luck with your Dodge Bigg **** Biz Coupe.
Congratulations for having such an nice ride now. These puppys surely are the underdogs of this scene, the fact that doesn't make them any less desirable to me. I have also an '46 D-24 Business Coupe here
New York is so easy it's not funny - if you know the forms. Cars with no registration, ask 'em for MV51 and MV51B. You don't need one if you've had the car over 12 months, the instructions on the form tell you the rest. When I went to register a '50 Chevy they kept getting Honda VINs in the computer because they begin with the same letter combination, but normally the clerks have no clue what one serial number is for. About the only decoding to a '46 Dodge serial is that Detroit build cars ranged from 30645001 to 30799737 and California builds 45000001 to 45002145. The cutoff year for ***les is 1973, those older do not have one, those newer require one.
