Need some advice on this motor set up. Motor is 1997 2.5 Jeep 4 cylinder The Facts: Has AC clutch pully, alt pully, 1 idler pully, 1 tensioner pully, a pully mounted to the intake, a crank pully and a water pump pully for a total of 7 things for the serpentine belt to go around. The Background: Have replaced the AC Compressor and clutch pully , the Alt and pully, The idler pully, the tensioner pully and about three belts. The Problem: When started something in this set up squeals like hell for about 60 seconds and then stops. AC is off. After the squeal goes away and you turn on the AC it squeals like hell again and does not stop. I have used belt dressing and tried silicone spray on what I could reach of the pullys to no avail. I have tried a loose belt and a tight belt to no avail. Need some good advice from pros. Any help?
Have one of those in a Dakota. Great motors. Are you sure the belt is on right? ( I know they stick a pic right under the hood but it still can be confusing. Could be something with the tensioner.
First off belt dressing is useless on a car....especially a flat serpentine belt engine. Sure it stops noise...for about 5 seconds. Silicone as well. Best bet is to clean off every bit of that **** from "ALL" pulleys and grooves and install a new belt. Throw away the belt dressing or give it to a farmer. If it has a spring automatic tensioner make sure its not seizing. Remind yourself to never spray your belts with anything other than water.....
You almost have to overtighten the belt to get it to stop squealing, but not too tight she won't idle. And yes that belt is ruined (belt dressing) toss it and clean all the pulleys. It will take a while. Trust me, I made the same mistake on our 97 cherokee.
Ok got it on the belt dressing. I used it sparingly. Why does the squeal kick in when the compressor clutch goes on??
I had a 4.0 liter jeep that did that, I had to really get the new belt tight to get it to stop squealing.
The belt squeals when the extra load of turning the compressor is actuated. On old cars the same applies to an alternator, when the load is required. The squeal is always due to a too loose belt(both V and serp belts), a glazed(mostly V) or worn out belt (either style) , a bad tensioner, or unclean pulley grooves causing belt to hop, and/or wobbling idler pullies. Belt dressing nor soap nor anything else should be sprayed or rubbed on a serpentine flat belt. It may provide a temporary solution to noise from a Vbelt but the key word is temporary. Correct tension, good idler pullies and replacement of worn belts with new are the solutions to belt noise.
check the pulley under the power steeering. i tightened mine too much and it didn't spin and the belt squealed. i just loosened mine enough to spin. it still seems stupid that there is not a jam nut or anything to keep it from backing out.
Iwork at a jeep dealer in fact thats where im posting from ,were real slow and about to close. there is no tentioner on q 2.5 its the same as a 4.0 with 2 cys whacked off your adjustment is with the powersteering pump just tighten it up real good dont forget to loosen the 13mm bolt behind the pump most people miss that one. Ifound some aftermarket belts are real 'rubbery' and streach when adjusted you should just be able to spin the belt 90 degrease when properly adjusted
What I have learned is that the tensioner pully must be loosened from its center bolt which allows it to slide up and down a slot. There is then a long length wise bolt that is turned to slide the pulley up and down to tighten or loosen. i am confused about the power steering bolts that were mentioned. How much belt deflection should I use 1" or 2" or what?
if you tried to adjust the tensioner without loosening the pulley center bolt, you have probably bent the tensioner bolt. ask me how i know...
