ive been lookin at alot of Barris cars from the 50's and alot of others but i dont notice very many white cars they are all mainly darker colors red burgandy copper things like that does anyone knw if there was a reason for this? and also ive not noticed any cars with painted bumpers? idk what to do on my car <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->
IMO painted bumpers look like hell. The darker colors were more dramatic and I think they gave the cars a little bit more cl***. Some were not dark though, the Hirohata, George Gowland Shebox Ford just to name 2 off the top of my head. Not to say those didn't have cl***... It's hard to explain what goes on in my head.
Number 1, painted bumper ****, thats why you dont see them on the best customs from the past 50+ years. In the early 50's customs were cheaper cars that were modified to look like more luxurious vehicles. Chopped tops, lowered, skirts, molded fenders made these cheaper cars look longer and more graceful, like the expensive luxury vehicles. Dark, rich colors added to the look of cl***. It wasnt untill the latter part of the decade when things got hokey, and brighter colors became popular. By then, it wasnt about looking cl***y, it was about looking outragouse and extreme.
i got brizo bumpers but they just dont look right i really wanted cali one pieces... http://public.fotki.com/Rikster/11_...s/jimmy-vaughans-54-ford/jgcalsat0311-vi.html this car just hits the spot for me idk..i had planned on paintin my 50 purple i even went down and looked at differnt shades today then i came how and cracked open the Rodders Journal and seen Jimmie Vaughans white 54 and wow im thinkin about white now
The car looks good...but, I must agree, it would look BETTER with a chrome bumper. Painted bumpers are o.k. if they are 'gl***, on a race car, imo...
Ya, the car does look mean without the chrome, keeping the accents dark. But someone needs to photoshop some chrome on there. The whole car will pop and be sharp. It just adds to the cl*** that the dark colors bring out.
Keep in mind that your Fleetline is a very different body style than Vaughan's 54 Ford Hardtop. Just because that color looks good on one car doesn't mean it will on another car. I'm not saying you shouldn't paint your car white... but at least think about it before you do... take a look around for photos of white Fleetlines... or get someone to photoshop one for you. Same for any other color you'd think of. As for the bumpers, there is someone repopping the one-piecers now. Can't remember who right now, but I've seen their ad in the magazines. Not sure about the quality, though. Another option is to weld the 3-piece ones together and have them chromed. that's what I did on the sedan I used to have.
Contrast IS Dynamics. The monotone, de-chromed thing has none. It makes a car look very stiff, bulky, and bluntly simple. too much complexity, is a clusterf$#%@k, as well...but, proper paint/chrome ratio=
Holy Shiiiiiiit!!! I'm not a fan of painted bumpers, but that Merc looks better than if the bumpers were chromed, IMHO. Food for thought...Ole Pork
Guys with talent can make alot of things look good. I would still go with chrome on the Merc though. I'm another who doesn't care for painted bumpers. This is just a random thought about old customs. White has always been known as a color to hide flaws. I wonder how many went with the colors to better show off their skills? Please, this isn't too say that all white cars are hiding something. I would think you would need something to go along with white on your 50 though as that would just be too much white IMO.
i have thought about purple with a white cove like with the buick trim but no trim on there just a line pinstriped between it
I too became a huge fan of white, I have a 1956 buick wagon, that I sprayed a couple days ago, I sprayed the bottom like a medium blue and the rest of the car is white, it looks clean, white is a simple color and stands out on good clean cars! I know they say white hides flaws, but it looks so simple and clean when it is done... good luck, and chrome bumpers on a white car would be cooler than painted bumpers!!!
I think jimmy vaughn owned a light(flat) purple 50-51 fast back in the early 80's with buick trim and 56 chev wheel wells... any body got shots of that? It had chrome bumpers. If you like the look of a painted bumper, why don't you roll the pans, and then use some thin/chrome acessory guards for bumperettes. you would get the best of both worlds.
Very good idea, but when you roll the pans, it brings the car into the late 50's early 60's. So it really depends on what he's looking to end up with.
NCA (http://www.nationalchevy***oc.com/) has your repro 1 piece bumpers. They look pretty nice, but time will tell how well the chrome holds up on them, I've only had mine for a few months. Another vote for not painting the bumpers on your car *especially* if you paint it white. It will end up looking like one of those euro trash Miami Vice AMG mercedes. yuck.
