G'day Im looking and making a single barrel mechanical fuel injection unit for a holden six. I want to use a diesel fuel injection pump and modify it to run petrol at a constant flow reletive to engine revs. I want imput on the idea if anyone has done it, knows of anything similar or even a decent site that explains how they r set it all up, i need info and pics please. tyler
Lucas made an awesome mechanical sequential injection system which was fitted to 'PI' model Triumph sedans, TR6 PI sports cars etc in the late 60's to mid 70's. There's still an occasional one lying around in old wrecking yards, so you may be able to pick up a set somewhere. There's plenty of information on them around, google 'Greg Tunstall' in Oz and you'll find his website. He's in Brisbane and a specialist repairer for old Trumpy nuts like me. The system ran a pump off the distributor with 6 lines going to injectors in manifold pairs bolted to the head. With the original injector petrol pump problem well and truly solved, these systems are reliable and work great. Cheers, Glen.
my I6 runs mechanical fuel injection. i've replaced pretty much the whole system. it's quite easy to work with once you understand how it works. here's a good book with great info http://www.amazon.com/Bosch-Fuel-In...7520105?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1188735804&sr=1-1
For years a mechanical fuel injection system was used on aircraft engines. Still used on many of them. I have the parts for one here somewhere. will look for them this afternoon
cheers for the info guys, currently bardering with a local bloke for a diesel injection unit, I do wonder though if anyone has plans for an injection manifold lying around....hint hint cheers tyler
A diesel injection pump may not be to long-lived just pumping gasoline. They depend on the lubricity of the diesel fuel to keep them running smoothly and not grinding themselves to bits. Straight gasoline would likely render it useless in a fairly short time.
Corvette used mechanical FI from 57 through 65 and you might read up on how those operated for some ideas on your home-built. The rochester FI has great throttle response and good gas mileage. Ol Blue
I don't think lead would make any difference, Bio-fuel might. There are also additives available for diesel fuel which might help. These additives have been developed due to the introduction of "low sulphur" diesel. Sulphur was the primary lubricant in diesel fuel since the beginning of time, but since it is also one of those "nasties" that the environmentalists don't like, it has all but been removed from a lot of the diesel fuel here in the USA. Might be different down there on the other side. Any lube you could add would help, but the downside will be the smoke that will likely result. I suppose you could use a two-stroke mix and fog the insects while driving.
