Hey Guys I was wondering if any of you knew about the earlly Ford 9 inch rear ends wich are disirable for guys with 64-65 Falcon's and Comet's ? A good friend of mine is running a 65 Comet with a 8 inch and has had no problems with it but would love to go to a 9 inch with out having to purchase one and have it narrowed down to fit. I was told that the 57 to 59 Ford 9 inch rear ends were very close to the width of the factory 8 inch Like what is in his Comet. Its no problem moving the pads but I was not sure of the widths. Any help or info would be great. Thanks Jon
Jon My 60 had a 57 9" it bolted right in the pad was about 1/16" wide but never gave any trouble. We used to use them in 65/66 Mustangs to replace 8" and used the stock axles and brakes just have to make sure it is 28 spline. If the 64/65 is wider like the 67/68Mustangs I think it will fit perfect.
Thanks Judd, I did not think about the 60. Trying to find one so they can make it there winter project of putting it in. Jon
I've been looking into the rear ends for my 65 Cyclone. The 57-59 ford rear end is a direct bolt in for the 65-66 Comet, Mustang. These are 57 1/4" width from mounting surface to mounting surface. The mounting pads ,I believe, are 43" on center. All these are 28 spline small bearing axles. The 57-59 wagons have large bearings but are the same width. I may just go with a beefed up 8" trac lok differential. I feel it may be just as strong as the 9"/ 28 spline. Anyway ,strong enough for my purposes. BTW, the 8" are all 28 spline and are interchangeable with 9"/28 spline sm. bearing axles. If your Falcon was a 6cyl. and does'nt already have an 8" rear end it might make sense to go 9" if you can readily get one with the correct width. Don
