Back in my younger days my motto was "If you ain't broke it yet, you ain't trying hard enough." Broke a lot of good parts. Transmissions and rear axles were my speciality, but there were a few motors and other parts sacrificed for good measures. Ever hear of anyone breaking a 318 crankshaft? I did! Had a two lobe section of cam from one big block Mopar I kept for a while. How about the 1-2 gear shift arm out of a Hurst comp shifter? Yep, two of them!

These days, I'm getting to be an old man and think about how much it will cost to fix it again. Had a lot more fun when I was younger. More expensive, but fun. Gene

    SLEEP!!!

I work second shift and have two kids. Everything I do happens after midnight when any other sane person would be in bed.
Most nights I don't even start in the garage until after 11:30, and the baby wants a bottle at 5:30. I can sleep when I'm dead.

Well, lets see? Burnt the vavles in the 226 I6 ford racing the yungsters in there rice, striped the cam drive gear in same motor, it had the phanolic gear, was racing a 97 1500 chebby truck, I won then phhust goes the gear! I love sixbangers with three on da tree!!!
In motorcycles, my last Ironhead sporty, 1975 1000cc, I got it with the heads off, so I hand gaged the rods, I figured I'd get about six months, And low and behold! six months to the day!!! rods went, I was only going 110mph and she would go 125mph! so I knew it was going!....Roach.

  6. err i've nuked a 85 holden rodeo ute engine -it lasted eight months of flogging untill it died. I was on the way back to perth and got to toodyay and it started to ratlle at odd reves, I called the old man and he said "drive it till it dies then walk" got the full death rattles 1km out of toodyay- it lasted untill 10kms out of gigi so about 35kms of death rattes untill it punchered a rod through each side of the block.
abort from that I always use the laundry for cleaning parts, and most of my good engine and speed bits are in my room- the garage is part of the house isin't it!

I've donated a large hunk of iron over the years to the local landfill. Had a 59 Impala with a 327 that wasn't happy unless I was wrenching on the motor or ****** every other day. Had a 55 chevy that went thru the end wall of the garage and knocked my Dad out of his recliner before it stopped. I could go on and on. First marriage I rebuilt a 283 chev in the utility room. Told the wife I couldn't lift it by myself and no one would help me till I got it re***embled and cleaned up. And like i said on and on and yada yada yada!

  8. 45 years ago she forced me to choose between her and this thing. Her engagement ring got sold to pay for it.

Sacrifice ? Guess I'll never know.

Use to cost a $1000 per race with the 81 road race mustang. We would run 5-8 races a season for 6 seasons chasing the SCCA central divisional championship.
1 week old Honda Civic at an Auto-X at the old Donnybrooke racetrack.
    Is that enough???

And 3 engines qualifing for the late model race at the Minnesota State fair in the late 80's.

one 460 engine in the Tow vechile and one 200HP 2.0 ford race moter in a gt3Pinto for ONE lap in a drivers school is my best shot to satisfy the RACE GODS.

Traditional hotroding has got to be cheaper?????

  10. Lets see....3 340 mopars, 1 273, 1 318 that blew in a spectacular way (blew the crank right threw the bottom, right through the centerlink - stopped fast), two transmissions, three rear ends, a couple of rads - and that is all on my little dart. Don't ask about the other cars....

I balanced a set of Flatty rods on the kitchen table about 6 months ago. Somehow the iron filings ended up in the kitcen sink. I thought I washed em all down but the next day I found a whole bunch of rust marks etched into the enamel of the sink bottom. That little miscalculation is gonna cost me a new sink and faucet and a half a day to put them in, though I have'nt paid up yet.

On the inside of the outboard edge of our bathtub is a quarter sized chip in the porcelain lining, a reminder of the wet sanding of the dashboard from my 48 Plymouth coupe almost 30 years ago. Thank God it is not visible when entering the bathroom, I think that's what saved me.

This is what happens when you see 10,500 rpm and don't let off. this is on a 410 ci. chevy small block the froged rod was twisted off. you could see the exhaust valve on the piston, the reason you dont see any burn gas on the piston is because It ran on alcohol.

Got **** for baking a Toyota 1300 cylinder head in the oven to install a set of valve guides.

Cleaned my race wheels in the dishwasher one weekend when she was out of town. (I paid for the damn thing, why can't I use it?)

Wife broke her toe on a pair of Weber DCNF 40 carbs and manifolds for the above Toyota 1300 that were sitting in the living room.

Ran her truck at an autocross one day when my racecar wouldn't run. I towed it to the track and paid my fees, I'll be damned if I don't race. Ran the 2wd F-150 with tow package in stock cl***. At least I didn't finish DEAD last.

I have a metal clutch disc in the shop that has no lining left on it. Spun the lining clear off when I oversped the clutch while downshifting in a sweeper turn.

Somewhere I have a Turbo Supra piston with a valve (what's left of a valve) stuck in it. My first turbo car and my first time using a wastegate bleed.

I'm so glad I'm going back to racing.

I wasen't just my finger i sacrificed,, i went thru tons of parts over the past 33 years i've been play with cars.

The piles of Muncies, rear spyder gears (from my 55-57 chevy rears), axles, motors, and the list would go on, like many of us,, the years were just plain old fun..
And just for us older guys,, loads of hurst shifiting linkages, them dare rods broke an awful lot.. LOL

Ford 390 block, crank, and rods, worked suzuki samurai (hey, 4-wheelin' is fun too) block, crank, and rods--that was a good one, after it was removed from the engine bay, my buddy and I stuck a baseball bat through the block and carried it out of the way, BMW 5-series pistons and valves on two separate occasions (hey, autocrossing is fun too), multiple honda 250 engines, and just yesterday I took out the transmission in my Ducati...haven't pulled the engine to split the cases yet, but this one is gonna hurt the checkbook...

30 years of my life. and more stuff then I can count. 15 years on the road around Europe, well I wont have it in another way. No sacrifies at all. Just love, but sometimes you get hate back from the damn things.
