I REALLY gotta change the glass in my 46.I think that 2 pieces are still good. Everywhere I go its the first friggin thing that people mention. All the work in the car...paint ,trim wheel and tire combo, stance. It all goes down the toilet. All they notice is the damn glass cracks. I had it at a barbecue today and people actually thought that it was vandalized while parked out front!!! Dummies! It kinda seperates the car people from the rest of the world though!!! Its everywhere I park!!! Anybody else have this happen?
YES!!! The pass side windshield on my 50 Merc is cracked. It cracked when I was installing it.Someone ALWAYS tells me it is cracked .NO SHIT!!! Dont you think I noticed that??....Regular people.......
The previous owner dropped my car on a trailer. Has a dent on the bottom of the fender at the rear. Popped off the lower chrome trim also. I drive it daily and really, not concerned with it. I'll park it when the snow flies and fix it then. I can't tell you how many times people have pointed out to me the that the trim is missing (I do have it). I mean, do they really think I haven't noticed?
It's almost rude that they would point out the one visible thing wrong with the car. I mean, can you imagine these people introducing you to their children and you saying, "Wow, he's a cute kid, but that harelip is disgusting. When were you gonna have that fixed?" At least, that's how I would view it. Most descent people don't go out of their way to point out flaws in someone's pride and joy. I feel for you.
My neighbour cracked a door window within 15 minutes of me owning my car when he slammed the door after looking inside LOTS of people have asked about it even though its only in the top corner. Rude people shit me.
Thank you so much for pointing that out to me. I don't believe it! I've owned this car for xxx years and never noticed that. When they give you the idiot grin, quietly point out their flies are open.
I use Tempered glass on flexible cars. stands up much better than Laminated. any glass in a frame laminated is fine. no problem in forties to sixties cars with big solid doors, but in the flimsy teens, twenties and thirties cars I usually install tempered. just my preferrence. nothing written is in stone. I've installed laminated in almost every kind of car built in the last 42 years....Jim
It really takes very little talent to be a critic. I guess they have no idea how much work it takes to get all the other stuff right. All they are able to recognize is that the glass is cracked.
You can really thank the discovery channel for making all this shit look easy to the average Joe Couch Potato. I can't tell you how many times some bozo has pointed out all the rust on my Olds like I didn't notice it was there. I've even had a couple people recommend a company on the West Coast named JC Whitney as a good place to source my patch panels, because they have EVERYTHING. Noone makes the patch panels I need, but what do they know, they've read a catalog and watch TV every night. It is really frustrating, especially after you've spent tons of hours just getting the damn thing on the road, but most of the time it's not their fault. They're just ignorant and lazy and have no concept of what this stuff takes...
If you're offended by them pointing it out, why not fix it? Obviously the rest shows your effort and makes the cracked glass stick out like a sore thumb.
I have a crack in my driver side windshield of my Hudson. It happened when I put it back in after painting my dash. It is original and brittle. When it comes time to replace all the glass(which is soon)I will do it. I don't need some jackass pointing it out.
yea and some people cant afford to replace everything right then and there but wanna drive it and u shouldnt point out the one lil thing wrong with the car
Just etch an arrow pointing to the crack and a small sign saying "beware of crack it kills...and so do I"!
Funny isnt it? Alot of times i will see a hotrod that i think is cool i notice fuel line clamps and licence plate bolts ,etc.,and never even noticed a big dent in the door ,until someone mentions it .Most people that i talk when gassing up my Ranchero or at a local show or something always say the same things to me, either ( "what color are you gunna paint it when you restore it ") ,or ("man that thing would look cool with some 22's after you lower the front ") ...
in 2000 i got a huge deal on a bmw 2002, i busted my ass on rebuilding that car, in the end, beautiful. about 2 months after the car was finished, a small crack came in the top center of the front glass, no big deal, body flex... i did drive the shit out of it, lots of trips to the gulf during hurricanes, any way, i put it in alot of local shows and i got a lot of "cant even afford a windshield'' SHIT, all these fuckers with low buck cars or no car at all, dont have a clue how much money and how much time was spent to restore and modify a 2002. forward to 2007... all the glass in the buick is either cracked or bad smoked, if they say any thing now, i know they are all just unschooled dumb asses, and they get the polite.... move the fuck along, dipshit.
Cracked? My drivers door has duct tape holdin' it together...at least it keeps most of the rain out. I gotta get some glass ordered. It appears that my '46 ford used a tape seal to secure the glass. I'll have to find a replacement. Until then I guess everyone can remind me my glass is cracked
ricers wouldn't know what to do with a 2002. i went through about 7 of them over the years; damn cool little cars. bought my first one out of a salvage yard for $250, second one off a slot-car shop owner for $150... damn things rust like crazy though. i still got a set of hubcaps for one around here somewhere..... the '59 Galaxie my Dad gave me has the wrong wheel covers (real '59 caps fall off too easy ask me how i know) and a bent rear 1/4 top trim strip for which i have a replacement... but it's the ratty interior and rust poking through the hood that folks really pick on. never mind that stallion of a 390/4v and the dual exhaust beating your eardrums out... that rough seat always brings the loudmouths out.
The only "flaw" on my '64 visible to Mr. & Mrs. Minivan is the windshield. So naturally I had it pointed out to me twice at my first show. I also had a woman notice that the rear door handles were shaved - She then walked up to me, put her fists on her hips and announced loudly that "I can still tell that it's a four door!" and stomped away
I think people just want you to notcie their "keen" sense of attention to detail... They notice the cracked window and then tell you that your car's a '57 Chevy no matter what make, model, or year it is.
My daily is a 67 Cutlass. like all G.M. cars of that era, the rear window is rusted out along the drip channel. the rest of the car is in reaonablt straight condition, but the rustiest (visible) spot is for sure the rear window area. I get "when are You gonna fix that rust spot?" all the time. my answer is always the same... Never. I will NEVER paint this car. I will fix the rear window when the damn thing finally falls out. why? Because I am too busy fixing other peoples rust ridden shit to give a damn about my own rusty rear window. I have found that a little vinegar in the voice makes folks back the fuck off.
I think it's just human nature to point out what some perceive as flaws. Next time somebody "reminds" us about ours, they actually showing us THEIRS. _________________________________ "I don't care if they ARE booin' me, at least they're makin' noise!" - Dale Earnhardt Sr
