I have not been able to find any sort of late 50's early 60's car for my first ride so i might just have to settle for a muscle car and if i can't find a cool 50's early 60's car in a week or so. I might have to buy a muscle car because their are more in my price range. I have to do this because i only have a l limited amount of time to bring it into a shop to work on it.But i hate to do this in a way but has any one else ever had to settle for a different car then what they wanted.

    Cheers ratfinkforever

but good luck on your search for a prodject . ok let the heckling begin:D
and the answer to your question "has anyone had to settle for a different car then they wanted??"
nope , i wouldnt be happy doin something that i felt i could be doin something else..
kinda like ginger vs. mary ann

  4. definate Mary Ann :D oh yeah!

  5. Don't "settle" for something other than what you want. I think you need to look alittle harder because you can find some 50's early 60's cars a lot cheaper than a muscle car. Keep looking.

I'd wait. You will not be inspired to pour time, money, and frustration into something that you 'settle for'. Patience, gr***hopper...

Where are you finding muscle cars cheaper than 50's and 60's drivers?

I literary looked for years before finding something. I started just wanting anything old, then as I saw more started to recognize what I wanted. I the ended, any project you get into will be a good learning experience, but at the same time try to get something that holds your interest. And don't knock muscle cars too much

I always wanted to have a finned Chrysler-car. Didn't really look for one 'cause I've got plenty of projects already, but just kept my eye open for one.
Then a friend of mine saw one for sale in South Carolina. I asked for some more pics, talked to the owner, bought it, shipped it across the pond and called it mine...

Yeah, I rather wish I could have bought the '60 300-F convertible which was for sale locally overhere, but I was way too late so it got away.

Yeah, I want to know that also. Muscle cars are through the ceiling. Although everything is expensive, I think 50's and 60's drivers are at the low end of the market.

I've got no problems with muscle cars. But if it's not what you really want, don't get one. It's hard to spend the time and money on a car that doesn't really do it for you.

  14. Where are you located in canada? I know where there are lots of cars here in ontario. Or import one from the states.

Nothin' wrong with muscle cars, but you answered you're own question: "this site is intended for older rods" :D

so you asked about anyone that ever wanted something and had to get something else? i wanted a mid 50's car to custom and when i was getting ready to get my license my grandparents gave me an 88 Chevy silverado. definitely a far cry from a 54 shoebox. i over came the desire of a custom by building a custum with something else. i built my truck with a 50's hotrod stance. big and littles. rings and caps. and then got it striped and such. it also sports the traditional mexican blanket over the bench. it's built 50's customish but is great for a daily driver. long story short you can always build what you want with what is easily obtainable. needless to say if a 50's car is really what you want it will always be what you dream about but there is also something to be said for being original.

This is good advice, if it's something you have to work on, the commitment won't be there if it's not what you wanted in the first place. That's one of the reasons there are so many projects available out there. Don't settle, be patient and get what you want.

contrary to my first reply i strongly agree with what was said here. i have been trying to sell my truck for quite some time now to buy a shoebox because it isn't really what i wanted in the first place. my heart just isn't really in it. it's easy to get wrapped up in a project that isn't really what you want. but i believe that the wait will be well worth it.

I know what you mean, but there's some good advice here, too.

It's hard for me to give advice, since I have too many project cars and not enough time to get them all done...but I'm working on one at a time and I've been able to make some progress by focusing my efforts this way.

If I were in your position, I'd either:

    1) - Buy a wagon, because wagons are always cheaper than comparable coupes or convertibles.

    or

    2) Buy and build something to flip and make enough to buy the rod project you really want. The later-model truck shown above is a great example. You can learn about modifying cars and make a couple bucks once it sells, and that's a win-win for you.

While I like muscle cars too (see my sig), I don't understand the issue with finding a 50's or 60's car. You can certainly find a mid 50's for much less than you're going to pay for a muscle car of any type. Need help??

    So,

If you couldn't find a girl that would date you would you turn to dudes?

    :D

Seriously, if you can't find an old car you probably need better friends.

I think I'd hold out. What's the hurry?

I hate to state the blatantly obvious, and somebody may have said it already, but........

My wife got sick of waiting for me to finish my ride so she wanted a muscle car to drive while mine is under construction. She did not find one in her price range so this is what we bought.

Not what she wanted but with a few mods she is happy with it.
But she still wanted a muscle car. The good news is she is now looking for a 57 caddy instead of a muscle car.

When I first got into the car scene I wanted something pre-60's or a straight up A hotrod, but I decided to get my hands dirty with a mid 60's car first. Mainly because I could get a good drivable car cheap and I needed something I could learn **** on but still drive and find parts for easy. After a couple years with my Galaxie I handed it off to a friend and started working toward the cars I really wanted. It's good not to settle, but it's also good not to get in over your head.

Best ****ogy on this subject ever. Don't be the guy trying to sell the late-model pickup with the hotrod mods. Most potential late-model pickup buyers don't want that stuff. Seriously, though, if you don't have your heart set on anything specific and you're not working with an impossibly small budget or looking for a RUNNING DRIVER, you should be able to easily find something that suits your needs. If your budget's too small, save up and spend your time learning everything you can so that when that right deal comes along, you both recognize it and are ready to pounce. As I said, patience. They haven't made most of these cars in 50+ years...

Nice Galaxie. I'll always have a soft spot for those cars.

Specifics might help too. What kind of car are you looking for?
If it's more the money issue, Falcons are super cheap cars with good potential. Do a search for "Falcons done right."

Apparently everyone on the board that also likes muscle cars needs to drive th Canada and steal them because it sounds like it's easy pickins up there.
