I know this was specifically mentioned by a member here so it's worth posting: http://money.cnn.com/2007/09/05/autos/fuse_recall/index.htm?postversion=2007090516 the short of it has to do with the bulk packs of fuses not working correctly and melting into a mess.
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=199327&highlight=more+harbor+freight+crap yea I posted that. it got closed down, I was just trying to warn people on the hamb ! guess It got a few folk`s worked up.
Fuses that burn your car down, toys with lead paint, poisoned pet food. WTF I try to buy American as much as possible. I've been putting the brakes together on my car. Today I got 2 brand new Raybestos wheel cylinders for a 57 F100 for the back end. One made in USA, one made in China. It's like I don't even have a f-ing choice anymore. WTF
Harbor Freight sells shitty stuff. We got it.... Do we really want a forum full of posts about how shitty their stuff is?
Made in China = cheap, shitty, dangerous, potentially life threatening, junk. One thing that has not and will not change in business....you get what you pay for.
I don't have a problem buying solid/non moving part tools from them but I'm not going to be buying a drill press, welder, fuses, etc from them.
I remember years ago when Ryan said 'no politics' but it cant be avoided. Politics is in everything we do including our old cars. (think about the metropolitan planning commission saying you cant have a non-running car) Our best hope now is for Ron Paul to get elected as President of the USA. If you dont know what Ron Paul stands for, google him
no wonder why that sawzall I got from them for 6.99 minus the 10% off coupon took a shit already.
Every electric tool I've bought from them has always worked great! I bought a buffer from them for $40 bucks 4 yrs ago and I use it every day with no problems! (prof. auto detailer) Just gotta know what to buy from them.
Rashy because of the origional post of those fuses on here I got to warn a couple of friends NOT to buy those fuses.the post on the folding cherry picker gave me the chance to check out the construction of the ones I was looking at to buy NOT from harbor freight.I personaly don't mind a post where safety is an issue not everyone will catch something like this.and I'm glad that members of the HAMB give us a heads up on stuff like this.
Yeah, I gotta agree that the original post on the fuses was an EXCELLENT heads-up. I mean, we all know the big stuff is probably shit, but when you buy fuses, you expect that they'll work...they aren't complicated, and I always figured even a cheap one will still do it's job. The post on the melted ones was a big shock to me (no pun intended). I wouldn't have thought fuses like that wouldn't blow when they were supposed to. I bought a Harbor Freight hammer drill for 19.00. Renting one from Home Depot would have been $40 for the weekend. If I get just one more use out of that hammer drill, I'll have tripled my money! -Brad
I bought a grinder there and it lasted for like 3 years of abuse. When it took a shit I got another one and they wanted to sell me a warranty for like $10. I decided to skip it, since I paid $18 for the whole thing. I think the only reason the old one died was it got some sandy crap in the armature when I was cutting up this '47 Cadillac to get the motor out for the dickweed I sold it to. On the other hand I bought a big crowbar there when I needed to make a shitty '59 Chevy convert into a roller. I broke one of the teeth off the end of it that day prying the brake drums off. I decided in the future on cars with drums like that I would just cut them with the grinder before prying, so they'd come off easier. But it makes me wish more cars had drums that seem to be a steel disc with the iron band cast around it. HF is great for specialty tools you'll use once or twice in your lifetime, and tools to carry with you into the junkyard or whatever that if you lose 'em/break 'em you're not out much and no one's going to want to steal them. But I wouldn't buy anything there that my life or health depended on. For instance, would you buy safety glasses that were made in China? There's a reason those guys squint so much. Sorry if that's not politically correct.
Not to mention the American jobs going over there... Used to be, you bought foreign to save a few $$'s...now you buy foreign because a) it's all that's available or b) you can't afford NOT to...soon, you won't even be able to afford to buy, at all... Global economy was supposed to put the US on top...instead, it's dragging us down to the 3rd world country's level. Buy American whenever possible - sure, it's going to cost a bit more, but the end result will be a strong US economy, as it was in the 50's and 60's. Off the soapbox. Have you guys ever checked out www.garagejournal.com? It's another one of Ryan's little babies and it's pretty cool. I haven't had the chance to visit in a while but I seem to recall they have a tools forum. The pics of the shops some of those guys have are amazing... And, not to be taken the wrong way, I wasn't so much bashing on the fact that this is another Harbor Freight = crap thread so much as saying that, with as much crap as they sell, you could fill this forum up pretty quick.
