If that's the case, then I want to impound Zorba's Ghost. I'd make space for that!

Somebody once told me "frontier just is great...until it's your justice that's bering frontiered." Government tends to operate on a slippery slope. A VERY slippery slope. Someone does a donut, they should have their *** handed to them, but through established channels. This law will eventually become a tool to enforce anything the individual cop considers reckless, behaving badly, etc. behind the wheel. You're coming around a curve in your bias-ply tired highboy...the curve is pretty smooth and can be taken at 50-55 in radials no problem. Your light car on the skinny tires is hauling through at 45mph and yaws the tires. John Law sees that you have a handfull driving the car and heard tires bawling, and pulls you over saying you were putting on an exhibition of speed for the kids who were standing in the yard pointing and grinning. He calls the wrecker and they flat-bed your car away for a month. According to that law, there's nothing you can do but pay the fine and impound bill, plus whatever other processing fees they throw at you?
I'm not saying there isn't a problem with idiot drivers out there, but this is a typical knee-jerk, blanket "feel good" reaction common to the state of California. The real problem arises when the government begins to see anyone out of the ordinary as being "part of the problem" and they have the solution.

I agree that people should be considered innocent until proven guilty and due process and all that, but I also agree with a law that tries to keep idiots of the road, in my neighbor hood we have a problem with kids in their Jap cars doing donuts and this drifting ****, I think they should have their cars impounded and not just because they are doing it in a Jap car, the same goes for any other type car, Jap, US, Euro. If your on public roads don't act like an idiot, but I also think that if it's in a private lot or a closed off area of some sort (car show, dragstrip) then i think the cops should keep their noses out of it!

  5. More Big brother, this law can be bent to apply to any of us by some unhappy cop.

  6. What we as hotrodders have to realize is most citizens do not even want us to OWN a hot Rod ,.....muchless do a "donut" [or anything reguarded as reckless driving] in public on a hiway or even at a show as detailed above.....
And really It is not too far fetched that they could be right in their ***esment that there actually is no place for such acts.....

SAD BUT TRUE...the "straight an narrows"- hate us!
We just have to realize that this sort of thing can only bring to an end our events and eventually our rights to even build and drive these cars.
Citys such as Paso /Las Vegas / Gatlinburg tennesee are examples where things like this have contributed to a shows demise....

I guess the message is this-

If ya wanna act like an *** -expect to be treated like one....

I think the thing that most of the people agreeing with this law are missing is that, you can still punish people who drive like idiots without infringing our rights.

You give a person a ticket for exhibition of speed, and if they are found GUILTY by trial, THEN you impound the car.

The problem with this law is it allows the impounding of your car without any trial, and even if you fight the ticket and can prove that your action was not an exhibition of speed, you are still stuck with the impound fee's (plus not having your car for a month).

It's just like the drunk driving laws. They start punishing you before you are actually found guilty, and if you turn out innocent - do you think you get any reimbur*****t?

I spent a night in jail and had my licenses suspended for drunk driving, only to turn out to have a BAC of .01. Did they compensate me for my time in jail and not having a license for 3 weeks?

    Hell no.

Honestly I don't know the exact situation out there in CA.. I don't see m***ive amounts of street racing around here, especially in the neighborhood areas, so I'm sure I don't see the full picture. I just know that some rules seem to get abused on both sides and when the Law side abuses it, there usually no chance in hell of the citizen side defending themselves.

I agree, and anyone who thinks that a cop can be trusted with that kind of power is extremely naive.

How many of you are honest enough to admit guilt when speeding. I was brought up, never to lie, period. Take your medicine like a man. How many times have you been stopped for speeding, knowing full well you were speeding, but told the cop you either didn't know, it wasn't you or everyone else is speeding.
That cops sees the act. Its a misdemeanor committed in his presence. Thats all he needs to arrest and impound. One of my cars has cheater slicks. I know then are slicks and likely to squeal if I gas it to hard with the roadway wet, so I don't. I have never unintentionally squealed my tires. My other car has bias ply tires. I know they don't grip the road as well as radials, so I slow down.

Bring on the law, it will get the idiots off the road. Driving is a priviledge that some idiots abuse.
